Women in perimenopause can lose 8–10% of their total muscle mass in the 3–4 years before going a full year without a cycle.
Muscle is about so much more than aesthetics.
Muscle is one of the primary sites for glucose disposal — meaning it helps pull sugar out of your bloodstream and use it for energy instead of storing it as fat. The more muscle you have, the better your body is at regulating blood sugar, reducing inflammation, and supporting long-term metabolic health.
As estrogen declines, our body becomes less responsive to muscle-building signals. At the same time, cortisol often increases, which can accelerate muscle breakdown and make it harder to maintain strength and lean muscle mass.
