BC Plus 55 Games
The 55+ BC Games are an important part of the BC sport system and the largest annual multi-sport event in the province. The Games offer the opportunity to celebrate sport and active living with other participants from across the province and experience the hospitality of the host community.

This years games will be held in Kamloops in September. Once again, Zone 7, which encompasses Kimberley, Cranbrook and all the way up the valley to Golden, will be well represented by Kimberley Indoor Tennis Courts (KITC) members and participants in the Tennis category.

Thirteen individuals will be participating. They can all been seen practicing and honing their game at the Rotary outdoor tennis courts and at KITC for the competitive and fun BC Plus 55 Games. The thirteen includes Sergio Spadafora, Harry Morrison, Lorraine W , Ammie, Brad B, David B, Lannie B, Bob Hodgson, Dave J, Maureen J, Steve C, Lynda C and Anonymous.

Tennis Anyone!

Now that the weather is warmer, many of our KITC members have started playing tennis outdoors.

They can be seen playing tennis in Kimberley at the PUBLIC tennis courts at Rotary Park.

Feel free to Drop in Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 10 am weather permitting. (Yes, it will stop raining soon)

Kimberley Indoor Tennis Courts Relocation Project - How it Happened!

I think we all appreciate the fact that we have an indoor tennis facility able to serve our region in the East Kootenays. The fact is, this facility required a lot of blood, sweat, tears, time, mental anguish and money to see it through. A huge amount of thanks need to be extended to all those responsible for all of their dedication.

Below, you will find an account from David Bellm (President KITS) of just how difficult this endeavor was.

As many people are aware, in the early days, the club was situated higher on the ski hill, but had the misfortune of occupying land that the City wanted to sell for development, which they did.

I started a "Save the Indoor Tennis Courts" campaign to raise funds for the project. Initially an ATV was raffled off over the summer of 2001 with tickets sold in the Platzl and Tamarack Mall.

A petition was also launched using the checkout counters at Mark Creek Market (AG Foods), gathering 1400 signatures which were presented to the City with the idea of relocating the facility. Additionally, delegations made presentations to council and appearances on a cable TV show were made, all to no avail.

All of this effort however did make some people take notice and the developer eventually offered the building to the society in return for paying for the dismantling and off site storage.

By 2004 enough money to complete the construction had been raised. The Canadian Provincial Infrastructure Grant, and grants from Teck, the City of Kimberley, and Kootenay Saving Credit Union stand out, but every dollar counted and all contributions are listed on a plaque in the building. The remaining finances necessary were rounded off by a mortgage and my personal donation.

We were grateful to receive the site by Selkirk School granted by School District 6. The board of the society overseeing the project at that time, consisted of Barb Paris, Peter Munroe and myself.

We hired Mid-West Construction in Creston, who had constructed the original building at the hill. It took them approximately 7 days to reassemble the structure at the Selkirk School location.

Between May and December all of the indoor services, surfaces and facilities, including, heating, lighting, court surface and nets, were installed. The washroom was to follow about two years later.

Eric Bodin and Peter Munroe were front and center that summer, physically installing the lights and heating system. Randy Fediuk handled essential sub-surface work needed to anchor the net posts. Michael Brennan and Murray Johnson handled court surface preparation before the crew from Tomko came in to install the court surface. The foundation had already been put in place in 2003 when Doug Gilmar, another city employee, had kindly volunteered his time.

The Kimberley Indoor Tennis facility opened for business in January of 2005.

Thank You to our 2026 Sponsors. Funds received over the last 2 years helped us fund repairs to the roof and replace our aging heating system which was completed this Winter.

A Joint Use Agreement is in place where Selkirk Secondary School has exclusive and free use of the facility during the school day. Selkirk students can be seen in the facility playing Handball, Dodgeball, Tennis, Jogging, and Fitness training. The tennis courts are available to Kimberley and Cranbrook tennis players outside of school hours.

Sponsorship and funds received benefit both Selkirk students, our community, and KITC.

We are looking for vintage photos of Kimberley Indoor Tennis. The Tennis Bubble was at the ski hill before its current location beside Selkirk School parking lot. Building relocated and rebuilt 2001 to 2004.

We are hoping to post vintage photos on our bulletin board.
