The bookkeeper's role is to CONTROL the bookkeeping files.

As a business owner, if you have a bookkeeper on your team...

It's okay to go into the bookkeeping software you're using to look around and understand your numbers to comprehend what's happening in there.

However, don’t touch the file, don’t say it’s wrong, and don't move things around.

Don’t send them a message if an error or correction is needed.

Why?

Because it's your bookkeeper's role to control the files.

They're also there to help you understand what they're doing in your books.

Have you asked your bookkeeper, "What are you doing in the software?" or "What's the process?"

It's okay if you haven't asked, not many people do.

It's normal to trust that the bookkeeper is doing the right thing.

Just ask your bookkeeper to show you the numbers, and they should help you to understand everything you need to know.

Sometimes, I show my clients what we're doing so they can better understand our work.

They don't need to do the work, I just want them to understand it.

Bookkeepers update the records regularly, usually every week or month.

They also prepare the files for tax filing at the end of the year and send them to the accountant.

Their role is to make things easier for the accountant by ensuring everything is organized and ready for them.

This is a question that new business owners always ask. Why? Because it feels like a waste of money to hire a bookkeeper for the small amount of transactions that a new business may have.

Many business owners who come to me know how to make money, they don't know have to manage the money. It's the management of the money that calls forth more money.
