Mariam is an RECE with over 20 years experience teaching children and working as a daycare supervisor.

12 Tips for New Supervisors
1. Read the licensing manual – Highlight the important stuff and take notes as needed. Complete online test on the CCLS website
2. Find a mentor or support group – It is a great way to learn new things and lean on to for support when needed
3. Attend workshops and networking meetings – This is another great way to make connections with other centers' and further enhance your knowledge
4. Be ready for changes at work place – Remember change is inevitable. It is scary but it is for better. You may lose staff or parents during the change process but it is all worth the effort if there is a positive outcome of the change.
5. Organize your policy binder appropriately – Policies and procedures are a huge part of any workplace as they layout the guidelines and defines how the organization operates
6. Create a daily schedule for yourself – A daily schedule will help you organize yourself and will keep you on track to complete your daily tasks. The schedule should also be flexible at the same time to accommodate unforeseen circumstances
7. Build relationships with staff and families – Spend time with them in order to build trust and understanding. Get to know their strengths and challenges that they may be facing. Provide support as needed.
8. Set boundaries for yourself – Create a healthy work-life balance for yourself. Understand when your mental health is being compromised and when you must delegate tasks to other staff.
9. Go on a vacation without feeling guilty about missing work – You deserve to take time off work and unwind yourself. Delegate your tasks to someone who is filing in for you. Turn off everything that is work related and focus on yourself.
10. Make mistakes and learn from them – Always reflect on your daily work. Make notes on how to improve your work in the future
11. Always ask questions – Whenever in doubt, ask questions to have a better understanding. This also eliminates tasks that are being done without any purpose
12. Reflect why you choose to come in the leadership position – At the end of the day, reflect on your reason for choosing this filed and your current position. Think about what you want to leave behind for other educators to follow.
