Had the pleasure of speaking at the inaugural Totum Movement And Performance Summit 2025.

Too often, strength coaches and medical professionals work in silos. My presentation this week was about tearing down those walls and creating one common language for Return to Play. When everyone is aligned, athletes win.

🚨ARTICLE ALERT🚨

It’s been a while since I have written an article, this is part 1 of a 3 part series on how I bucket my athletes to help them achieve peak performance.

Strength, Power, Coordination are three main buckets I place my athletes into. This first article discusses all things strength and the bench marks I use to help me determine if athletes are “strong enough”.

Stay tuned for part 2 on power development!

I remember being 17 and scared sh*tless that I wouldn’t be able to bench 225 my first year of university. I was fortunate to have a great trainer who got me right! I ended up benching 3 reps my first year of university @ a bodyweight 165lbs. May not seem like much but it was a major feat for me. I was a kid who struggled to bench my own bodyweight at one point. By the time draft year came around I ended up benching 17 reps @ 225. Through my university tenure I learned multiple different ways to improve my upper body strength.

Now I want to give back to the high school athletes, that is why I am giving away my 225 - 8 week bench program for FREE. The FREE program is for high school athletes only.

This program is a 3 day a week program that can be in ADDITION to your current gym program or replacement of your current upper body program.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is the upper body can handle a lot more volume & recover quicker than your lower body.

Everything is done to ensure these truths don’t happen. Communication & documentation is of the utmost importance as it will take away the guess work. If you know what you did and it resulted in a positive or a negative result you now have a “performance compass” to help you navigate the realm of performance to achieve the desired result, WINNING.

Bucketing athletes is a topic of discussion, but to me, it's about creating a framework for improvement. My approach to sports performance is like a tree, where the roots are improving game day performance.

The machinery branch represents having the right body and tissue health to keep up with demands.

The operating system branch shows the need to improve an athletes horse power for improved neuromuscular outputs in strength, power, & speed tasks.

Finally, the skill branch emphasizes the importance of having the skill in their respective sport to be able to reach maximum potential.

By breaking down specific variables, we can focus on improving precise aspects of game day performance. Less guessing more strategic interventions.

🚨 POSTURE FOR SPEED 🚨

I cannot stress the importance of lumbo-pelvic control in sprinting. It is one of the first things I teach my athletes & it is always reinforced during every speed warm up. Poor pelvic position starts a domino effect of issues that can lead to less than satisfactory performance or even worse, injury.

Anterior pelvic tilt
⬇️
Poor thigh switch
⬇️
Back side mechanics
⬇️
Touch down out in front of your centre of mass
⬇️
Increased GCT
⬇️
Increased breaking force
⬇️
Slower performance & increased hamstring injury risk

As I always say to my athletes… “PELVIS UP!”

Happy training!

🚨🚨🚨*COURSE ALERT*🚨🚨🚨

Many students in kinesiology, physiology, physiotherapy, athletic therapy, and other applied science degrees are taught the physiology of resistance training but not in a way that can apply in a practical setting. Over the course of the 6 weeks, participants will understand how to connect the two.
Putting theory to practice is very important in the learning process.

Participants will understand how certain sets and reps elicit specific adaptations, participants will also be given workouts to gain a stronger understanding of the adaptations.

Understanding the physiological adaptations will allow you to open up your toolbox of exercises to elicit those adaptations.

The six modules:
🔹 Building (Muscle Hypertrophy)
🔹 Activating (Neural Adaptations)
🔹 Transferring (Sport Specific Movements)
🔹 Understanding Stress
🔹 Programming Ideas
🔹 Developing your own template
