Diabetes is hard but we make it look easy.
The constant blood sugar checks, carb counting, injections, sleepless nights and so many other things that people without diabetes don’t know about is what gives us our
strength. We don’t get days off but we keep going because it’s our only option.
For everyone out there with t1d be proud of everything you accomplish every single day. You are a warrior 💪🏻
Happy national diabetes awareness month 💙

WHO AM I⁉️
I wanted to take sometime todays to really introduce myself and explain what I do!!
So I was diagnosed with T1D at the age of 12. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was in grade 6 and I remember being so thirsty all the time and having to go to the bathroom every 5 minutes.
Then one day in February in 2006 I was at synchro practice and I started to feel really sick.
I went to the hospital and got so many blood test done. I was never really scared of needles so that part didn’t really bother me.
But then the doctor came into the room and he said “ you have Type 1 Diabetes.” it’s going to be ok, but your life is going to change.
At this point I knew that this was going to be really hard…
And to be honest it was really hard for so many years…
This lasted so many years then finally a light went off in my head… I can’t live like this anymore…
And well here we are 17 years later. I am a certified personal trainer and diabetic health coach.
I help amazing women who are struggling to get their T1D under control so that they can live life the way they want without having to give up the things they love!

Here is something that one of my clients said after just a couple of weeks of working with me:
“I feel like this week was a big improvement and achievement for me. I have been thinking more positive in situations and when I start to feel stressed I take some deep breaths and what I learnt with you to make me feel better. I am also starting to feel better about myself”
If she can do it, so can you!!

How to prevent lows when going for a long walk/ run? 🚶🏻🏃
This is definitely a FAQ I get a lot and is also a really tricky one to answer!
Everyone’s bodies are different and different things will work for each of use! But here are my top 3 tips to prevent that annoying low in the middle of your walk!
1️⃣ Track what you see 📈
For 2 weeks after each walk, track what you see on your CGM ( or finger pricks) and find out what changes need to be made. Track what time you are walking at, what you ate before and what your sugars are. From there you can decide what changes need to be made. Maybe you will need to decrease your basal insulin, or maybe you will need to eat a bigger snack before you go. Tracking is important and will allow you to make these important changes!
2️⃣ Start your walk a little higher 🔝
This may not be a popular opinion but I always like to start my cardio session ( walk or run) a little bit higher because I know I will drop while I am moving. Aerobic exercise brings up that heart rate and we are moving at a moderate pace for a longer time period which is known to decrease the glucose levels. So starting a little higher around 9 or 10 mmol/L ( 162-190 mg/dl) for me always helps me stay on track! By the time I am done my walk I am back down to 5 or 6 mmol/L (90-106 mg/dl)!
3️⃣ Be Prepared 👍
Never go on your run/walk without low snacks and fast acting carbs! Its soon important! You don’t want to be in the middle of your walk and all of a sudden you feel a low coming on and you have nothing to treat it with! Whether you are going for a 5KM walk or a 20KM walk bring what you need! I have a running belt that I put around my waist no matter what distance I am going! I always pack glucose tablets, gummy snacks and my debit card incase there is a store near by and I need extra sugar!
Hope this was helpful and you take this info into consideration on your next walk or run!! 💗

✅ People with type 1 diabetes LOVE routine! It makes all our daily decisions so much easier to manager! However we can’t let diabetes stop us from having fun and doing the thing we love!
🌊 This weekend I travelled to Niagara Falls! I knew I would be off my normal schedule, eating foods I was not use to and walking around a lot more then I do in my average day!
🎢 All of this can really challenge your blood sugars and cause some serious rollercoasters!! And let’s be honest I had some of my own!
🙏🏻 The most important thing to do is PREPARE yourself with everything you need and FORGIVE yourself for not having perfect sugars. It’s normal. If this week was a little bit off, we try again next week and make improvements.
💕 No one is perfect! DO NOT let diabetes stop you from doing the things you love, like lunges and push ups in front of the falls😉

Are you constantly worrying about your blood sugars while you are exercising?? Well punch those fears away! 🥊
🏋🏻♀️Exercise and 🩸blood sugars are a very complex idea. It takes a lot of trial and error to figure out how your blood sugars will react to exercise. Even after 14 years with type 1, I still have some struggles. This is of course completely normal as there are SO many factors besides exercise that can affect your blood sugars ( but that is a whole different topic).
-
Typically aerobic exercise ( walking, running , biking etc) tend to bring down the blood sugar while anaerobic exercise ( weight lifting, HIIT, sprints, etc) tend to bring up your blood sugars because they are more intense. That being said, everyone’s body is different and may react to exercise differently! This is why it is so important to check your blood sugars when working out and ALWAYS be prepared! 🧃
-
For me, I use to only do cardio and I never really understood why my blood sugars would drop during my workout BUT within the past couple years I have started mixing up my training by including both aerobic and anaerobic workouts into my routine! This has helped my blood sugars stabilize and also helped with insulin sensitivity!
