If you want to build a good home it takes a strong foundation. Creating and cultivating a yoga practice, in isolation, is an honourable yet tough form.

Yoga is undoubtedly an individual unfolding and union. Taking it apart to put it back together. One step forward two steps back or maybe ten steps forward 6 steps back. Anyone who has practiced knows this is a process not for the faint of heart yet rewarding in ways that don’t need to be sold.

The last 16 months have taught us that although we can do things on our own, or through a screen, (who knew?) the power of community and connection is far more important than we may have originally thought!

The desire to connect with others is a fundamental part of the human experience. And working on your own mat while surrounded by others is something very special! It’s a supported, synergistic collaboration which doesn’t exist anywhere else, in quite the same way. Somehow the yoga room allows for progress not obtained, on the mat, in solitude. Together we make it better!

I am excited to announce I will be teaching ashtanga yoga classes, again, and look forward to welcoming all my old students and new ones at The Space Oakville

This private, serene, space offers something beyond the typical; certainly enhancing your home practice and taking students into a new realm.

Starting Saturday August 7th where, in the presence of good company, we can continue to spark our community while we grow ourselves! 323 Kerr Street Suite 102, Oakville

What happened to yoga? Addressing the elephant in the room!! People write me to ask....The truth is it’s still out there. There are many qualified, experienced teachers around. You have to look for them. Ask questions: how long have you been practicing?, who taught you?, what do you know? Anyone can teach what they know but be aware not all teachers are equal! The problem stems from the fact that yoga studios make their money from training and pumping out as many “teacher“ trainees as possible. Pattabhi Jois said “everyone wants to be a teacher who wants to be student?” I certainly do and after twenty-three years I am still learning. A coffee barista is hardly qualified after 200 hours let alone a yoga teacher. We need to do better!! Yoga has become a watered-down version of its former self. Kettlebell, Pilates, Barre and Weights have nothing to do with yoga. Fusion classes are simply that. A commercial, mainstream, sellout, sidebar. I studied Pilates long before I turned to the yoga mat. The tradition of Pilates is a wonderful addition when taught in the classic sense but it’s not yoga. Kettlebell could be a way to develop muscles but unrelated to the sutras. It’s important to distinguish between what is being taught. Ashtanga Yoga follows a set sequence of asanas which can take years to perfect, if that is even possible! Many Ashtanga practitioners I know are some of the most qualified teachers. They didn’t start out to teach. They practiced! Through years of practice they became knowledgeable. “First ten years beginner” he said. The understanding is not something you can learn in a 200 hour course or even over the period of five years. I look back on my first five years before even going to India, what an amateur I was. It’s a life long practice. And asana is only one of eight limbs. Those interested in learning or continuing to unfold can contact me directly. I only have a few private/ semi lesson time slots left. If you are looking for a good teacher in your area perhaps I can share the names of great teachers near you. After all don’t you deserve the very best?

Thank you to all my beautiful students who allowed me to guide you for the last five years. It was my honour and greatest privilege to teach you that which I have learned from all the senior teachers who gifted me such knowledge. As you continue to learn, “keep in mind that, when you practice yoga, you’re not practicing to improve yourself. You are perfect. The practice is there to help you know that.” 🕉

Although I’ve had a studio previously and have been teaching and practicing yoga for over 20 years, I never had an independent Instagram page for Urban Yoga by Kelly Steele. Please follow me in additional this page in order to keep up to date on all my classes and retreats. I appreciate the support!! 🕉
