Disc injuries can be scary!
They can be scary because you need your back to function well in order to live your active lifestyle.
Theyâre also scary for a deeper biological reasonâŚ
Theyâre near your spinal cord, and your nervous systemâs job is to keep your spinal cord SAFE.
Thatâs why the alarm bells are so loud when you injure a disc.
What makes this worse is that the healthcare system isnât equipped to provide long-term strategies to resolve a disc injury.
What they ARE equipped to do is use incredible technology to collect information, which, in this case, an MRI.
The trouble is that itâs often poorly communicated to the patient (you!) what the imaging actually means and which options are available.
Sometimes surgery is the best option, and oftentimes itâs not. Itâs challenging to make that decision for yourself when you donât have all the information and youâre dealing with pain.
Surgery is generally the way to go when there is bowel and bladder involvement or loss of motor control (think not being able to lift your toes).
When those issues arenât present, a conservative approach is very much a viable option!
When itâs needed, surgery is a godsend. When itâs performed as a knee-jerk reaction, itâs the opposite.
You always have the right to ask your physician questions.
-Ask about other options.
-Ask about the prognosis if you choose conservative care.
-Ask how they came to their conclusion.
-Ask them to tell you why you SHOULDNâT get surgery.
-Ask for a second opinion.
If you need my support, ask for it; thatâs why Iâm here!
If youâve been frustrated with back pain, and you want to see if we can help you, comment âbackâ, and I will get the conversation going.

The very first time I met Jessye, she told me she was really nervous to start working out because she had never done strength training before.
On top of that, she was scared of getting injured, which she really couldnât afford because of the physical demands of her job.
I know gyms can feel intimidating, especially when strength training is completely new to you and you donât fully trust your body yet.
Thatâs one of the reasons Iâm so proud of Jessye.
She worked through that fear, committed to the process, and learned how to navigate training in a way that felt safe and supportive for her body, especially with her hypermobility.
Confidence in the gym doesnât usually come from just âbeing brave.â It comes from understanding what your body needs, understanding what youâre doing and why, and learning that your body is capable.
Watching Jessye build that has been awesome.
If youâve been waiting to feel ready, send me a DM.

Maybe what you need is not less activity, but more room below your capacity line.
Some things are fixed.
You canât reverse an old ankle sprain, and you canât remove screws from someoneâs shoulder if they need to be there.
But a lot of what affects your capacity is changeable.
Recovery is one of them.
If you improve your sleep, manage stress better, and support your body with better hydration and nutrition, you reduce the load your system is already carrying.
Your functional capacity is another.
If we improve flexibility, mobility, and strength balance so load is shared more effectively across your body, you create even more room.
Now youâre looking at a different version of yourself.
A version that can handle more of what life and training demand without constantly crossing the line.
And from there, we can keep building.
Raising your capacity means improving the qualities your body relies on most - strength, endurance, aerobic capacity, and whatever your assessment shows you need.
What if your consistency could create more room below that line every day you wake up?

One of the things I really admire about Sherry is that even though sheâs officially retired, she has decided that taking care of her body has now become her full-time job.
Sheâs not willing to let age dictate what she can and cannot do. And sheâs not interested in using âIâm getting olderâ as an excuse to sit on the sidelines.
I love working with people like Sherry. People who still want to travel, stay active, keep up with the hobbies and activities they love, and trust their body to keep up with the life theyâve built.
Because the truth is, getting older is not the problem. Letting your world get smaller because your body canât keep up is.
I aspire to be like Sherry when Iâm her age.
If this resonates with you, and you want to move better, feel stronger, and get back to living an active life with confidence, send me a message.

Pain doesnât mean stop. It means pay attention.
Most people treat pain like a full stop.
But itâs really just your body saying, âThis isnât working.â
The issue isnât the pain. Itâs that no one ever taught you how to read it.
You donât need to quit.
You need a smarter plan.
Letâs figure out what your body actually needs and build from there.
