Everyone needs to read this and understand that a lot of horses end up shipping to auctions and slaughter because someone didn't want to make the decision to do what needed to be done for their equine friend. Euthanization is sometimes the kindest thing for a horse that " needs special care and therefore I need to find it a new home"
Do what is right for your horse, not what is right for you!!

Not for Profit Feedlot Horse Community Group. Please read the FAQ. Many people have suggested that I set up a FB group for this project. We must work together!
Tracey takes down information on horses from the feedlot and we share their pictures and stories in hopes they can find new homes. I have thought very long and very hard about doing such a huge undertaking and what this would mean to me and my family. This project has taken up so much time already and the commitment is huge, and it has only been a week into it! The response has been amazing, peopl

Anyone recognize this brand.
It is rafter CF
I give credit where credit is due.
Tammar equine came to OLEX today, a meat sale, and bought 5 drafts , which certainly would have been destined for slaughter after the Christmas holidays.
I even think the meat guys are happy she bought them because now they don't need to feed them for two weeks.
They also purchased two ponies.
Good job, nice to see horses getting onto a trailer headed in a different direction!!
I guess at some point I need to say something about the interesting day at Carson's auction this past Saturday, December 17th.
Not sure where to begin.
Certain auctions are considered " meat auctions" this does not mean that good sound broke horses do not go through these types of auctions. They definitely do, all the time. Hell I have many on my farm that have been sold at " meat auctions" that are even registered, extremely well broke to ride and sound to boot!
I have more awesome horses on my farm that have come from meat auctions than seasonal auctions such as Carson's or Biylea.
Just because there are horse auctions doesn't mean those auctions are meat auctions.
Just because a horse is sold at an auction doesn't mean that horse is not good and it also doesn't mean that horse will be shipped for slaughter.
Carson's IS NOT a meat auction.
Seriously how many meat auctions have a printed catalogue or an online catalogue with a description and sometimes the pedigree of the horse to be sold.
Even the person who is selling the horse at Carson's has their name printed in the catalogue.
Just think about how much of a witch hunt that would be if the names of the sellers were printed up and everyone who attended a meat auction such as OLEX saw the name.
At a meat auction , it is seldom likely that you can speak with the owner of the horse and not very often there is any info provided about the horses going thru.
You take your chances buying at any auction but at a meat auction well, chances are even less .
At a sale like Carson's you can talk to the seller, even ride the horse or see how it rides and handles the hub bub of the venue.
You can get a pretty good idea if the horses are sound and sane and healthy.
At a meat auction, you can sort of check for soundness but that is only if you can get the horse out of the pen without getting run over by the other horses wanting to come out of the pen to.
Most horses at meat auctions are sold by the pound.
Some exceptions are horses with awesome love notes or on occasion ridden into the ring.
Ponies and minis are sold by the dollar unless they are large ponies or very heavy medium ponies. These are sold by the pound.
The most noticeable difference between a meat auction and a horse auction ( for lack of a better description) is the fact a meat auction always has a weigh scale and a screen that shows the weight of a horse because horses are sold by the pound.
Carson's and Biylea and Claremont auctions sell ALL horses by the dollar. They don't have a weigh scale.
Now with all this being different between the auctions doesn't mean the meat buyers are not at those sales.
Of course they are, they are at every sale. It is what they do.
People who work in offices go to office parties or hang out with people from the office.
Trade workers have more in common with other trade workers.
A killbuyer is also a dealer. They don't miss auctions because that is part of their business.
They buy and sell horses and some sell cows or sheep or goats.
They will always have good riding horses on hand as yes, many people do still buy from dealers and many people do sell straight to dealers.
Dealers will pick out their best string of horses to take to auctions like Carson's and Biylea because they know the buyers there are of a different mindset than the majority of the buyers at a meat sale.
Most of the time the buyers have more money to spend at Carson's and Biylea.
They want to see how a horse rides or handles everything. They want to talk to the sellers .
This is exactly why the killbuyer/dealers want, more money, so they know at these types of sales they can bring horses and sell them.
It is the same reason why the sellers choose auctions like Carson's and Biylea and Claremont to sell their horses at, most of the time they get more money for their horse or horses.
I have seen comments about how there were three meat dealers at Carson's this past Saturday.
No there were only two. Not every dealer is a meat buyer and the two meat buyers who were in attendance were selling horses and buying horses for clients or resale.
They never bid up any homes or rescues as meat dealers.
One did bid up his own horses just to get a better price but not because he wanted his horse back to kill.
That is how auctions work so don't get offended if someone bids you up on a horse they own. Or a horse the dealer themselves have clients for.
I want to clarify a few stories I have heard about what happened at Carson's.
Yes one dealer who is also a killbuyer bought 11 horses ( no minis and no ponies) these horses were not bought for meat!! At the price that he paid on the majority of them he certainly wasn't buying for meat. At the prices the majority of horses ( not ponies or minis) sold for were well above meat price. This was not a meat auction remember.
14 horses did not load onto one trailer and ship for meat.
The young lady that was shoved was not shoved by a meat dealer lol
With so many people moving horses into the ring and horses not wanting to go in the in gate, s**t happens and people get shoved.
It is to be expected at any large animal auction if you are anywhere near where the action is.
This last part is for anyone who wants to go to a sale like Carson's or Biylea.
Take the time to read the catalogue.
These are the key words people need to understand and could very well mean a horse is at risk.
Great companion
Light riding only
Older
Any horse that is 5-10 yrs old and it says " not broke"
Hasn't been ridden in a few years.
Breeds to take note of that the majority of buyers are not looking for.
Standardbred
Standardbred x
Arab or Arab cross unless they ride very quiet and have some size to them
Sometimes thoroughbreds are not very high on buyers lists and also that depends of which sale they are at and how they ride.
Any young crossbred horse that is still a stud.
Not all auctions are the same. Not all auctions are meat auctions.
Not all horses bought at auctions should be labeled as " rescue" whether they are bought at a meat auction or the non meat auctions
Just because someone sells their horse at Carson's doesn't mean they didn't care for it or love the damn horse.
So exactly why did the horse need to be rescued??!
The seller sold their horse and the buyer bought that horse. There was no rescuing involved.
The horses that needed to be " rescued" were let go.
It doesn't matter that the order of go was screwed up. The horses were there to be viewed before the sale started, the owners were there to talk to and find out about the horses.
I know, let the drama begin. But ask yourself, were you at Carson's to know the story or are you just reading the never ending comments on Facebook and therefore thinking you know what really happened?
I will be the first person to admit that all or at least most rescues do amazing work and there is a time and a place that horses do need to be rescued.

SOLD ****************
this is a super nice 2yr old stud that just went through auction on Tuesday.
Amazing ground manners, very well handled and quiet. Picks up feet. Trots in hand to the point we think he may have shown in halter classes.
Stands 15.2-15.3hh already.
No papers.
No idea of breed but he looks like he could very well be a tbxwb, he is bigger b***d and has solid fair size hooves.
Whatever he is, he has one amazing temperment and lots of chrome for the show ring.
Sorry but that is all I know about him. I have his history since Tuesday till Thursday, now someone else needs to give him a longer history.
$800

15-20yr old, 14hh pony mare.
VERY well broke and quiet.
Not spooky. She has beautiful ground manners and loves attention.
Sometimes if she sees someone coming to her carrying a lead she will play hard to get but she is a treat hound so catch me if you can doesn't last very long.
She needs a trim. Appears sound.
She will be an awesome lead line pony for total beginner kids or for kids with more experience she will make a nice riding pony.
She is more whoa than go.
$600

Gelding is the chestnut and will be two in January. He stands 15.2-15.3hh. he is going to be a very tall and solid boy once filled in and topped out. Has been saddled.

He does have a club foot but does not affect him and it isn't not very severe.
Bay filly will be two in March. She is 15.1. As quiet as they come. Very well handled, ties, trailers, loves to be groomed. Beautiful kind eye on this girl with the temperament to match.
She lifts all 4 feet and has been tacked.
Filly is appendix but NOT papered!!
Gelding looks like a warmblood cross but it is anyone's guess what his breeding is.

This is the Southern Comfort's pony friend. She is so very sweet and nothing bothers her. She will be going with Southern Comfort or Dixie, to a lady named Tanya Boyd.
This was a group effort between Tanya and Mindy Lovell and quite a few other people who have donated money.
For those people who don't believe anything good can be found in a feedlot or at auction, please take a look at this pony and her friend Dixie.
Both are sound, both are kid friendly, both are VERY well broke. Dixie is passported and has taken care of many riders in the Hunter ring.
The pony is one of the most well mannered ponies I have had the privilege of handling.
You know the saying about some people, No matter what the circumstances, they always do everything with a smile" well this pony is a happy, happy girl!!!!
I do not consider Dixie, the tb or her pony friend " rescues".
They have fallen back a step but are now headed back to better times.
They just needed a lot of helping hands and caring hearts to get them over the hump:)
They were not sent to auction because they are old or crippled or young and unhandled.

sold
Dixie Compliance stands 16.1-16.2hh. She is an ottb but has had many years off the track and has been retrained for the Hunter ring.
She is also known as Southern Comfort in the Trillium world. She is passported to show in the Trillium level ( passport did not come with her)
This mare has shown in the Ottawa area so maybe a few people will remember her.
All the above info comes from someone who knows this mare well and has seen the mare in the Hunter rings locally.
Mindy Lovell
I , myself, remember the name "Southern Comfort" from when my daughter used to show in Ottawa.
Personally from what I have learned about this mare after handling her over the last week is she is well mannered on the ground, friendly, simple and quiet.
She is sound and a beautiful mover.
She has been well taken care of over the years.
She loves her pony friend that she came with and is very gentle with her.
This mare isn't owned by a killbuyer because her racing people let her down, she is 18yrs old, hasn't been near a track in a very LONG time.
Regardless of why she is where she is, she needs someone to give her another chance.
Info from the last owners was: used for lessons and showing, kid friendly.
Currently there are no videos of her but there are enough people out there that should know her and will vouch for her past history, I hope they will.
She is $1200 includes hst

This lucky young filly found a great home yesterday!
Thank you to the terrific, caring ladies that stepped up for her and will train her.
She has already proved she will be a rock steady horse yesterday.
She walked off a trailer and was asked to immediately walk onto another trailer and all this in a very strange noisy place.
She stopped and quietly looked around, never spooked or got bold or crazy, she just quietly stood still and took in the scenery and the noise of cars, trucks.
She wasn't sure of the new trailer but once she saw the pail of treats there were no second thoughts😃
She walked on and never looked back!
Onward and upward from this day forward pretty baby!!
Beautiful 3yr old paint filly, no papers so grade.
She is built like a tank!!! She is currently 14.3-15hh and still has growing left to do.
She is well handled, leads, ties, feet have been trimmed.
Friendly and easy to catch, likes scratches.
Is sound. Legs are straight.
Shipping date is next week sometime.
She is a baby and someone has failed her.
Don't have any history on her at all.
Buy her and make history with her.
The basics have been done, at least she leads, not like a lot of other babies that I have seen.
$1000 includes HST.
