An Update from Mike

When we announced earlier this year that this would be our final season operating Edgewood Links, we genuinely hoped there might still be a path that would allow the course to remain in local hands and continue what we have built. Unfortunately, that will not be the case.

The property owner has chosen not to sell the property. I understand, although it has not been confirmed to us, that new arrangements have been made with an operator based outside our community to take over the golf course following the expiry of our lease. That is the property owner's decision to make. But it is also our decision what happens to the business, assets, name and goodwill that we built at Edgewood Links.

As things stand today, I will not be supporting the golf course under its new ownership or operation. That is a personal decision. Having our rent increased to a level at which we could no longer afford to operate the course, only to then learn that arrangements appear to have been made for a new operator to take over under a new lease, simply does not sit well with me. I don't pretend to know all of the circumstances surrounding those arrangements, and others can draw their own conclusions.

Based on what we understand, the incoming operator will be using its own equipment and furnishings. As a result, virtually everything belonging to Edgewood Links must now be sold. That means everything — golf carts, course equipment, pins and flags, tables and chairs, appliances, furniture and everything in between.

I won't pretend that isn't disappointing. Keeping Edgewood operating over the past seven summers required a significant personal financial commitment, including taking on substantial debt and personal loans to keep the business afloat and continue investing in the course. I had hoped that, if another operator ultimately took over the property, there might at least be an opportunity to sell some of the equipment and assets as part of that transition. As things stand today, that does not appear to be happening, which means we are now faced with selling everything piece by piece while I remain responsible for the debt accumulated keeping Edgewood going.

We will be publishing detailed lists and pricing shortly. In the meantime, if there is something in particular you are interested in, please email [email protected] and we will do our best to reserve it pending pricing and availability.

Furthermore, there has been a lot of discussion about the name Edgewood Links, so I want to clarify where things stand. We have put an enormous amount of time, money and work into rebuilding this course and its reputation. Edgewood became more than a piece of property with 18 golf holes. It became a local business, a gathering place, a summer job for local kids, a supporter of community organizations and, I hope, something Dunrobin/Constance Bay and the surrounding community could be proud of. Accordingly, I can confirm that Edgewood Links will not simply be transferring to the new operator. We will continue to use and protect the Edgewood and Edgewood Links names and the business we built.

On a personal level, this is obviously not how I hoped the Edgewood story would end. We have poured our blood, sweat and tears into this place. We took a course that needed a tremendous amount of work and tried to make it something our community could enjoy again. Every dollar we made went back into the course. More importantly, the community gave Edgewood its life. I have always felt that Edgewood belongs, in a much more important sense, to this community. I hope there comes a day when the name can return to a locally owned and operated golf course.

And maybe the Edgewood story isn't quite finished. For everyone wondering about our famous Men's Night, we are working on some ideas to keep the Edgewood crew together next summer, including a possible “Edgewood Tour” supporting other locally owned golf courses in the region. It's still early, but we're excited about the possibilities. More details to follow.

If there is one thing I hope people take from all of this, it is how important it is to support the local businesses that invest in this community. Places like The Point, Dunrobin Auto, Scratch Sandwich Shop, and the many other locally owned businesses that employ our neighbours, sponsor our sports teams, donate to our causes and show up when the community needs them.

Local businesses only survive when their communities choose to support them. Please don't take them for granted.

As for Edgewood, we're going to enjoy the time we have left, sell what needs to be sold, and leave knowing that for the last seven summers this place was something pretty special. If you haven't been out yet, or you've been waiting to give Edgewood a try, please come and visit us before October 31st. Play a round, have a drink, grab something to eat and enjoy Edgewood while we're still here. Your business and support are truly appreciated, now more than ever.

Edgewood became what it was because this community embraced it, supported it and made it their own. For that, I will always be grateful.

Thank you for everything.

PS we will be having our first of likely many yard sales on Labour Day September 7th between 9am and 1pm. Watch for further details but we can confirm that pretty much everything is for sale!
