Empowering Small Businesses, Entrepreneurs & Visionaries

07/23/2026

I had the privilege of having lunch with my Great Aunt Goldie, who is almost 102 years old.

She has built one of the greatest empires I have ever seen. Not one made of money or status, but one made of family, love and people who genuinely want to be around her.

She has always been full of wisdom and has been a grandparent figure in my life. She has encouraged me, cared for me and taken me in as one of her own.

I asked her what advice she would give me for the next 60 years.

She said:

Be grateful for every day.

Be grateful that you open your eyes in the morning.

Be grateful for the life you have and the people around you.

Remember how important family is.

Appreciate people often. It may seem small, but it goes a long way.

She also told me that her brother, my grandfather, was a good man who always wanted to help people.

That stayed with me.

So, this is your reminder to pause and appreciate what you have, where you are and the people around you.

Tom Birkhan did not start 613 Home Care Services to become the biggest home care company in Ottawa.

He started it to become one families could trust.

In our conversation, Tom shared how 613 Home Care Services grew from a one-person operation into a team of over 25 employees while staying focused on personalized, consistent care.

That means carefully matching clients with the right support worker, giving families an opportunity to meet workers before care begins, and avoiding the revolving door of unfamiliar caregivers that can make an already difficult situation harder.

We also talked about what business growth really requires:

Better systems.
Clearer procedures.
Stronger onboarding.
Delegation.
Continuous learning.
The willingness to ask for help.

Tom also spoke about the important role personal support workers play as the eyes and ears for clients and families.

That is not just care.

It is advocacy.

This conversation is about building a business without losing sight of the people it was created to serve.

Grateful to do work that helps business owners not only grow and scale, but feel more confident running their businesses on their own.

That is always the goal.

Not just more ideas.
Not just more strategy.
But real clarity, better decisions, practical next steps, and a business that feels more sustainable to lead.

Thank you to my clients for trusting me to be part of the process. It means a lot.

That was one of the many things I learned while sitting down with Natalka from Under the Surface.

She shares how she turned an idea inspired by veterans and first responders into a business that's helping people experience the physical and mental benefits of scuba diving in a completely different way.

What I loved most about our conversation wasn't just the incredible work she's doing.

It was hearing the honest side of entrepreneurship:
• Starting a business without business experience.
• Doubting yourself.
• Learning as you go.
• Pivoting when your customers tell you what they need.
• Building something that truly makes a difference.

It's a conversation about resilience, purpose, and creating something bigger than yourself.

The third Founders Shmooze is
done, and I'm leaving feeling incredibly grateful.

Every month, I see the same thing happen.

People arrive as strangers and leave with new
connections, fresh ideas, and a reminder that they're
not building their businesses alone.

This month we had marketers, a personal trainer,
coaches, a financial advisor, a photographer, a
fractional COO, and an advisor helping companies sell
into Canada.

Different businesses. Different journeys. The same
drive to learn, grow, and support one another.

Starting and growing a business can be lonely,
especially when you work from home or spend most of
your day making decisions on your own. That's exactly
why I created Founders Shmooze.

Ottawa needs more spaces like this.

A place where you can have real conversations, build
meaningful relationships, and be surrounded by people
who understand what it's like to build something from
the ground up.

Thank you to everyone who believed in this vision and
continues to make it such a special community.

If you'd like a seat at the table, I'd love to have you.

August is full, and there are only a few spots left for our
September 9 dinner.

Msg me to join the guest list.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned from coaching business owners is this:

Most people already have what it takes.

They don't need another course.
Another certification.
Another strategy.

What they often need is clarity.

A sounding board.

Someone to challenge their thinking.

Someone to hold them accountable.

Someone who believes in them when they're doubting themselves.

The truth is, I don't create successful business owners.

They do that themselves.

I simply help create the environment where they can thrive.

And watching someone gain confidence, make decisions faster, grow their business, and achieve goals they once thought were out of reach is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

That's the power of coaching.

We often celebrate the success.

We rarely talk about what it took to get there.

In my latest episode of Business, Up Close, I sat down with Amanda, founder of Love & Loss Therapy, to discuss what it was really like to leave a stable government career during COVID and build a business dedicated to helping people through grief, trauma, and life's biggest transitions.

One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was this:
Grief isn't just about losing someone you love.

It can also come from the end of a relationship, becoming a caregiver, struggling with infertility, changing careers, retiring, or grieving the life you thought you would have.

Amanda shares how she supports clients through these experiences using evidence-based approaches, including EMDR therapy, while also opening up about the realities of entrepreneurship, marketing, and building a business with purpose.

If you've ever experienced loss, considered starting your own business, or simply enjoy hearing honest conversations with inspiring business owners, this episode is worth watching.

Happy Canada Day.

Today I'm feeling incredibly grateful to call Canada home, and even more grateful to live in Ottawa.

Every day we're surrounded by history, beautiful architecture, vibrant communities, and people who care deeply about making a difference. From walking past Parliament to enjoying our local neighbourhoods, it's easy to forget how fortunate we are to live in a city and country filled with opportunity, diversity, and resilience.

As a business owner, I'm especially thankful to work alongside so many passionate entrepreneurs, clients, and community leaders who are building businesses that strengthen our communities and support the people around them.

Wishing everyone a happy, safe, and memorable Canada Day. Enjoy the celebrations, make wonderful memories with family and friends, and take a moment to appreciate this incredible place we call home.

Happy Canada Day!

One of the most successful business owners I work with still second-guesses decisions.

That surprises people.

Because confidence isn't the absence of doubt.

It's the ability to move forward despite it.

Confidence is built through experience, action, and learning.

Not waiting until you're ready.

If you've been waiting to feel more confident before taking the next step, this is your reminder that confidence often comes after the action.

Not before.
