Kids can spot a fraud from a mile away. Faster than most coaches realize.

They know who actually cares about them… and who’s just there for their ego.

Not every coach is a big motivational speech person. Not every coach is an analytics mastermind. Your style is your style. But whatever it is, it has to be genuine. Players follow authenticity.

But they won’t buy into someone they know is faking it.

When athletes know you genuinely care about them, trust gets built. And kids will run through a brick wall for a coach they know believes in them.

Because in the end, players remember the coaches who changed their lives… and they remember the ones who could have, but didn’t.

Now you’ve made the team… this is when the work actually starts.

Enjoy the letters on your jacket for a bit, but don’t get too comfortable. There are kids out there at a lower level that have already started putting in work for next season.

You were chosen for a reason. Coaches saw something in you at tryouts—your effort, your attitude, your compete level. That’s what got you here.

Now it’s up to you to show up to every practice. Every rep. Every shift. Don't be the player that peaked in tryouts.

They picked you—now you have to show them they made the right decision.

Next up will be what a good off season looks like.

Day 6 of tryouts… or month 4?

Almost there—everyone’s in the same boat and feeling it.

Hang in there!

PART 3: The Comfort Zone

Excuses feel safe

“I wasn’t trying.”
“I was tired.”

But that’s self-protection.
It keeps your ego intact… and your ceiling low.

Most athletes aren’t scared of failing…
they’re scared of being seen failing.

So they stay in control.
Stay safe.
Stay average.

But growth lives outside your comfort zone.

Tryouts aren’t about being perfect,
they’re about finding your ceiling.

The ones who stand out aren’t fearless,
they’re just willing to be uncomfortable.

Might be time to step outside that bubble

PART 2/3: The Spotlight Effect đź‘€

Everyone thinks the spotlight is on them.
Every mistake feels huge.
Every shift feels like a test.
Every rep feels like everyone is watching.

But here’s the truth 👇
The person watching you the most... is you.

Everyone else is in their own head too.
It’s called the spotlight effect ...your brain makes it feel like all eyes are on you, when really, everyone is just trying to prove themselves too.

Coaches aren’t looking for perfect.
They’re looking for habits.
Effort.
Decisions.
Compete level.

So….
Stop trying to be perfect.
Stop comparing yourself.

Start competing.

Part 3 coming next.

Part 1

TRYOUTS ARE COMING…

Relax…you’re not building your game this week, you already did.

We have repeated this many times….you don’t rise to the occasion… you fall to your level of training.

So, control what you can control: effort, attitude, and response.

Missed stab? Fine.

A bad shift? Happens.

But slamming your stick or bad body language? That gets noticed.

A mistake won’t define you but your reaction will.

If you prepared, it will show up on the ice.

Trust your game. Compete every rep and every shift.

The players who stand out aren’t always the fastest or have the hardest shot,
they’re the ones who see the game first.

Scanning before, during, and after you get the ring gives you an advantage.
More time. Better decisions. Cleaner plays.

The best players aren’t just reacting—they’re prepared.

Quick shoulder checks. Head up. Constant awareness.

They already know:
Where the pressure is.
Where the space is.
Where their teammates are.
What the next play is.

That’s why they look one step ahead.
It’s a skill you can train—then it becomes a habit.

When the talent gap narrows, awareness is another tool in the toolbox.

Because when the game speeds up, the players who see more… play faster. 🔥

One of the most underrated offensive skills in Ringette?

The ability to draw coverage.

When a ring carrier moves with intent, defenders are forced to make a decision:

Step up?
Collapse?
Double team?
Protect the middle?

And the moment a defender commits… something breaks.

A seam opens.
A lane appears.
A trailer or crosser finds space.

Don’t just attack to score.

Attack to force decisions.
Attack to move defenders.
Attack to create for others.

Drawing two defenders and dishing to an open teammate?
That’s high-IQ Ringette
