Today, on Veterans and Remembrance Day, we honor two of our own Coach and Coach / whose stories remind us what discipline, courage, and service truly mean.

Amber served four years in the U.S. Army as a combat medic and paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division — the first female line medic in her battalion. From the front lines of Afghanistan to the front lines of women’s empowerment, she’s carried her mission forward: helping others rise above fear, build strength, and own their potential.

Nat served six years as a Rifleman in the British Army, competing internationally in fitness and sport before discovering the power of strength training. That turning point shaped his philosophy as a coach today — one built on grit, humility, and teaching others how to thrive, not just survive.

Both Amber and Nat embody the heart of MAP: service, resilience, and purpose.
Their military experience forged the same mindset they now pass on to every athlete and client they coach.

Today we pause to say thank you! For your service, your sacrifice, and the example you set every day. 🇺🇸🇬🇧🇨🇦

When we earned our pro cards, our training wasn’t 100% bodybuilding. We were still mixing in powerlifting. And truthfully? That crossover worked. Powerlifting absolutely builds dense size, and we’re proof that you can do both and succeed when you do it the right way.

But here’s the catch: powerlifting also eats into recovery capacity and won’t fine tune to detail you need do physique enhancement. Once we shifted all-in on bodybuilding style training, things changed. The offseason progress we both made was insane. We brought a completely new look to our pro debuts. Better shape, better balance, better everything.

This isn’t a knock on powerlifting. It’s a reminder that every phase has its place. Strength work gave us the foundation, bodybuilding work gave us refinement. Together, they built the athletes we are today.

If you’re stuck between strength and hypertrophy, you don’t always have to choose, but knowing when to shift your focus is what takes you to the next level.

Want to know how to make your training work with your goals? That’s what we do at MAP

Coach & have walked the walk to the highest level in both sports.

Dr. Ken Kinakin - Turning Your Passion Into Your Profession | Coaches Corner U 10/08/2024

The only rehab provider I will ever trust is one who's been in the grind and understands the demands I place on my body. And if that person also approaches their education and vocation with that same drive, well then they're worth their weight in gold... but then you have people like Ken Kinakin who take that to the next level.

In this episode, I sit down with the mastermind behind the best fitness and health conference on the planet, Dr. Ken Kinakin. I admit, I’m a bit biased, but SWIS has been pivotal in my growth as a coach and business professional. Dr. Ken Kinakin is a chiropractor, certified strength and conditioning specialist, and a certified personal trainer. Dr. Kinakin is also the author of “Optimal Muscle Training” published by Human Kinetics, www.optimalmuscletraining.com, and is the founder of the Society of Weight-Training Injury Specialists – SWIS that educates and certifies doctors, therapists and personal trainers in the areas of exercise muscle testing, rehabilitation and treatment of weight training injuries.

Whole foods vs Soul foods (The debate)

I am incredibly passionate about educating my clients on nutrition for health and not just macros.

I had a client recently come to me whose coach insisted that she have choc icecream in her plan every day for ‘balance’.

Now days it’s super common for every coach and influencer to preach ‘balance’ and ‘if it fits your macros’ and ‘make sure to leave room for your 20% soul food each day’.

I disagree.

For some, it can be a necessary to improve adherence,

BUT if your day on a plate looks like toast, a protein bar, a shake and a slice of cucumber for your micros, you’re missing the point of nutrition.

Trying to moderate foods that are literally designed in a lab to hijack your reward pathways and make you buy more of them will not only test your adherence,
but is akin to telling an alcoholic to moderate their alcohol intake.

Silly hey?

So at what point do you consider how these foods will make you feel?

And what point do you start putting your health first?

I am all for going out for the occasional weekend meal for mental health, but if 90% of your diet is low-nutrient soul food then you will feel crap, be unhealthy perform poorly.

I see this with my clients and there is a clear correlation between adherence and reaching their goals when their food quality increases.

Whole foods before soul foods. Period.

Trey Bruffey - Digging Deeper Into Wellness | Coaches Corner U 09/24/2024

Being solutions oriented is a lot different than resolving symptoms.

Our entire health care field is in the business of treating symptoms rather than finding solutions to the underlying issues causing the symptoms.

My conversation with Trey Bruffey highlighted so many important aspects of working towards real solutions and what role we as coaches serve for our clients.

We discuss:
Trey’s early journey and unhealthy relationship with bodybuilding
Mental health, addiction and bodybuilding
Thinking outside the box
Health vs. performance
Industry trends that have gone too far
Finding the solution to a problem and not a bandaid
Drawing ethical boundaries in bodybuilding

I'm grateful for the mentors and the role models that I've had within my journey as a coach. Tim Kontos is someone who probably has no idea how much he has influenced me. His ability to inspire those around him and his resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks.

In this episode of the podcast, I sit down with someone I greatly respect and have learned a tremendous amount from over the last 15 years, Tim Kontos. This is not our usual podcast. With my current injury and all the things that have come along with that, I wanted to speak with someone specifically about the mental side of injuries and how to navigate through them and help clients do the same.

We discuss:
Stoicism
Acceptance
Fear
Disappointment
Love and gratitude
Pride and humility
Being a burden and asking for help
