Have you seen our banners around campus?

In the last few weeks TUNA and the TCSA have been dropping banners around campus against Bill 5, the bill dubbed the “Unleashing our economy act”. What the bill really is unleashing is unchecked control over Indigenous lands in Ontario. Working in conjunction with Bill C-5 on the federal level, Bill 5 is removing many hard fought policy regarding land usage in the extractive resource sphere. Bill 5 changes definitions with the Endangered Species act, changes archeological policy in the Ontario Heritage act, removes the need for two environmental assessments under the Environmental Assessment Act, and much more. This Bill was passed in April 2025, before the Legislative House closed for the summer. While politicians were enjoying their summers, Indigenous Land Defenders were fighting against Bill 5, the Chiefs of Ontario condemning the passing of the bill.

We met with Dave Smith, our local MPP, to discuss our concerns with Bill 5. All of which were dismissed and undermined.

If you want to show your support to Indigenous Land Defenders, to show your discontent to our house representatives, join us on November 20th from 12pm-4pm in front of the Trent sign at the intersection of Water st and Nassau Mills rd.

In solidarity,
Trent University Native Association
