World Baseball Challenge

It had to hit a bit differently for all those who witnessed the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George — seeing Canada come out on top today against Cuba at the WBClassic. Congrats to Canada, beating the powerful Cubans!

How about Drew Pomeranz starting Game5 of the NLDS for the Cubs vs Milwaukee?

He was named top lefty pitcher while a member of the USA College National Team in the 2009 World Baseball Challenge! (Gerrit Cole was the top RHP.)

The starter for the Yankees when they need a HUGE pitching performance— he only pitched at Citizen Field in Prince George in 2009 in the World Baseball Challenge, never forget his complete game win over Canada in the WBC playoffs.

Soooo very sorry to learn late yesterday of the passing of Larry Seminoff of Grand Forks, BC. Terrible news, especially during the annual Grand Forks International (GFI) Baseball Tournament — which he founded, along with the World Baseball Challenge — without Larry, so much of my baseball life would not exist, and Prince George would never have held those amazing tournaments, as he founded the tournament in GF in 2002.

My baseball mentor. I will miss our calls and his insistence that Mookie Betts is the best player in baseball, a die hard Red Sox fan — a true gentleman. No one ever said a mean word about him.

Fun to catch up with friends! Two of the chairs of the World Baseball Challenge meet up in Victoria, Linda Self and Rick Pattie in the capital to watch the Cougars take a couple wins in WHL action — WBC was a lot of work but lots of great memories for PG! Shawn Rice et al….

Fun watching Jose Abreu double in a playoff game for the Astros — played for Cuba in the 2011 World Baseball Challenge, and was offered a US$60mil contract while buying children’s clothes in Walmart in College Heights! (True story, ask Paul Clermont)

Congrats to Laine Thomsen and Paige on getting married today in Victoria! Laine and his mom Sue were key people for the World Baseball Challenge tournaments.

The real story is former WBChallenge pitcher Sonny Gray of the Minnesota Twins, who pitched against the Prince George Westcana Electric Axemen in 2009 at Citizen Field, just beat the Blue Jays to send them to the sidelines.
