Breathe. It’s not that simple. When we are stressed or anxious our amygdala is working to keep us alert and safe. Imagine being in a cave with a raging storm outside and you need to be prepared to flee. That’s fight or flight. Trauma evokes the flight or flight response in our brains, which leads us to short, shallow breathing. Trauma is trauma The event is irrelevant. It’s the reaction that’s real. That feeling of being light headed, weak, disoriented is the feeling of suffocating.
