Southern Rangers Announce Caleb Kean as Head Coach for the Upcoming Season

The U15 AAA Southern Rangers are proud to announce the appointment of Caleb Kean as the new head coach for the upcoming season. Hailing from Sussex, New Brunswick, Caleb boasts an impressive playing career in Southern New Brunswick that uniquely positions him to lead the Rangers.

Caleb began his high performance journey in hockey with the KV Kings U15 AAA, where he spent two impactful seasons. His tenure culminated in a Provincial Championship in 2016, where he led the team in scoring with an astonishing 87 points in just 31 games, including 46 goals. This early success highlighted his potential and set the stage for a remarkable career.

Following his time with the Kings, Caleb joined the Saint John Vito’s U18 AAA team, where he spent three successful seasons. As captain for two of those seasons, he showcased his leadership skills and consistently delivered outstanding performance. His accolades in the NBPEI U18 AAA league are a testament to his dedication and skill: a two-time First Team All-Star, two-time league scoring champion, and two-time Most Sportsmanlike Player. Notably, he holds the record for the most points in league history, accumulating 170 points in just 99 games.

Caleb’s talent did not go unnoticed, as he was drafted by the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL and the former Dieppe Commandos of the MHL in 2017. After his final year with the Vito’s, he chose to retain his NCAA eligibility, continuing his offensive production in the CCHL, where he played for both the Carleton Place Canadiens and Brockville Braves, averaging over a point-per-game over three seasons.

Upon returning home, Caleb began his coaching career as an assistant coach with the U14 AAA Port City Sharks last season. His transition from player to coach has been marked by a strong commitment to fostering player development and a passion for the game.

“Caleb is the definition of a true leader and boasted one of the highest hockey IQ’s I’ve ever witness,” said Director of Development, Alex Carter. “I had the privilege of coaching Caleb for three seasons, and look forward to watching his continued transition into

Southern Rangers Welcome Scott Friars as Assistant Coach for the Upcoming Season

The U15 AAA Southern Rangers are excited to announce the appointment of Scott Friars as the new assistant coach for the upcoming season. With a solid foundation in both playing and coaching, Scott brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Rangers.

Scott’s playing career spanned three seasons with the U18 AAA Vito’s from 2004 to 2007. His talent on the ice earned him a 4th round selection in the 2006 MHL draft, leading him to suit up for the former Halifax Wolverines in 2008. This early experience laid the groundwork for his successful transition into coaching.

Immediately following his playing career, Scott began his coaching journey, serving as an assistant coach for the U15 AAA Rangers from 2008 to 2010. He then continued his development as an assistant coach for the U18 AAA Vito’s from 2010 to 2013. Most recently, he coached the U13 AAA Cougars, first as an assistant in the 2024-2025 season and then as head coach in 2025-2026.

“We are thrilled to have Scott join our staff,” said Director of Development, Alex Carter. “He is the definition of a ‘players coach’ and has spent the past few seasons developing and evaluating our future prospects. His passion for the game, communication skills, and development ideologies align perfectly with our values as we continue to build this program.”

The Southern Rangers look forward to the impact Scott Friars will have on the team and are eager to see how his expertise will contribute to the development of the players in the upcoming season. Welcome to the Rangers, Scott!

The U15 AAA Southern Rangers are excited to announce the appointment of Alex Carter as the new Director of Development for the upcoming 2026-2027 season.

Carter brings a wealth of experience in high-performance coaching over the past 16 seasons demonstrating a proven track record in player development, leadership, and effective communication.

Carter’s coaching career began as an associate coach for three seasons with the former U17 KennValley Spartans before moving on to the U15 AAA KV Kings.
Carter served as Head Coach for five successful seasons and established a reputation for helping guide players to the next level.

Following his tenure with the Kings, Carter joined the Saint John Vito’s U18 AAA program. Initially serving as an assistant coach, before being promoted to Head Coach, where he led the Vito’s for four seasons. Throughout this period, he collaborated closely with Rangers Director of Hockey Operations and newly appointed Vito’s Head Coach, Phil Richer before stepping away to focus on his business and coach his oldest daughter.

He has served as a maritime scout for the Sherwood Park Crusaders and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in the AJHL during his time with the Vito’s, further enhancing his understanding of player development.

“I am grateful for the opportunity and responsibility of this new role with the Rangers,” said Carter. “Truth be told, my favorite years of coaching were at the U15 level, guiding players through the elite performance pathway. I would like to thank Phil and Robbie for their support and look forward to continuing to build on the culture and development for both players and coaches in the Southern Region.”
