A tough start to the season as NL Spartans fall to NL Hurricanes by 13 runs.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take away. Abu Bakar Nabeel stood out as the Impactful Player for the Spartans with a fighting performance, while Zidan Ahmed earned Player of the Match honours for the Hurricanes after contributing with both bat and ball.

The season is a marathon, not a sprint. Heads up, lessons learned, and eyes firmly on the next challenge.

After yesterday's rainout, this fixture becomes the first game of the 2026 season for the Spartans.

A new season begins. A new challenge awaits.

The Spartans take the field against the Hurricanes on Sunday at 4:00 PM, ready to start their campaign and set the tone for the summer ahead.

Cricket’s Popularity in Newfoundland and Labrador:

At the end of the 19th century, cricket was the most popular sport in the province. Crowds of hundreds, and sometimes thousands, would gather to watch matches. An active league existed, with four to ten teams participating at various times.

The first recorded indication of cricket being played in the province dates back as early as 1824.

The Shamrocks: (pictured below)

The Shamrocks were one of the best cricket teams during that period. They consisted of players from middle class backgrounds and were considered the top team in St. John’s.

Interestingly, cricket was also popular among the elite families of St. John’s, including names like the Ayers, Bowrings, and Rendells.

The sport expanded to other areas in Newfoundland and Labrador, including Harbour Grace, Twillingate, and Trinity, with its heyday running from approximately 1880 to 1910.

Unfortunately, cricket’s popularity declined before the First World War, as soccer and baseball gained prominence.
