I’ve always been a huge believer of laying down a strong foundation of fundamental skill.
The better instruction children have, the better opportunities are accessible to them later.
Coaching older swimmers, I always had my work cut out for me when I started working with a swimmer who had been swimming with poor technique for a long time.
I always wished I could go back and help them when they were younger - it would’ve made my job a whole lot easier.
As I’ve started Swimming Stronger, I’ve been thinking about that more and more. Being a Swim School dedicated to teaching fundamentals means creating programming that’s available to newcomers in the sport - and to provide them with exceptional coaching and foundational development.
So here we are! Introducing the Swimming Stronger FUNdamentals Swim School for swimmers aged 6-10.
Our swim school philosophy is centred around fun, exploration, and expert instruction. You can read more about it on my website.
Also beyond excited to have a former swimmer of mine (and amazing human being) joining the team! Maddy will be helping me run the FUNdamentals swim school to provide young swimmers with a fun environment to become water safe and develop fundamental skills.
Excited to work with young families and help build opportunities for young swimmers!

As swimmers we often overuse our internal rotators and succumb to weaknesses that compromise the structural balance of the shoulder girdle.
To offset this, swimmers need to strengthen their external rotators.
Your only option isn't just to grab a theraband; you have plenty of exercises that train external rotation and other movements that are essential to creating effective movement patterns around the shoulder.

Core training often takes place on the floor in either a prone, supine, or seated position.
Swimmers need to make sure that their land-based training supports improvements in the pool, not just six-pack abs.
Diversifying your core training centred around rotating, transferring force, and improving stability will help bridge the gap between dryland training and your performance in the pool.
These three exercises are great to include in your training program.
Remember, no one-off exercise is going to make you better. It needs to be programmed with intent and delivered progressively in tune with your swim training.

Down Dog Toe Taps are a great body weight exercise for a few reasons.
They train the sling system by training the link between your hip and your shoulder through your core.
They train scapular stability, and thoracic mobility.
These elements are essential in the pool. Smooth force transfer from hip to shoulder applies to all four strokes. Swimmers need thoracic mobility to get into the extended position at the end of each stroke, and need stability in those extended positions.
Try some variations to progress this movement!
