I used to feel so uncomfortable in my own skin that I wanted to be anybody else except me. The discomfort was sometimes so intense I wished I could somehow become completely invisible, to escape (but where?), or just stop existing altogether. The emotional intensity was painfully exhausting and tied me up in such extreme knots of anxiety that functioning well enough to appear 'normal' became a daily challenge.

Despite the agony of it all, the seeker in me coaxed me, time and time again, into situations and environments where I could embrace my discomfort and move through it rather than run and hide. By repeatedly returning to the safety of non-judgmental and encouraging mentors, a breakthrough finally happened.

The day arrived when I could finally honestly say, "I feel comfortable in my own skin." Wow! And 'being me' wasn't such a bad thing anymore.

So much release of anxiety and interfering thoughts happened by activating my voice with peels of laughter and ripples of improvised sounding. The transformation that happened still fascinates me to this day.

And it is why I feel such sincere delight about offering to you this upcoming joyful immersion of laughter and vocal sound play that I will be leading next Sunday May 24th at The Redwood Studios in Toronto, in collaboration with Ann-Marie Boudreau, who 20 years ago, introduced me to the magic of "remembering who we are" through vocal sound play.

If you're looking for ways to tone down your stress level, one of my all-time favourites is laughing! The longer you laugh, the better, in order to significantly cut through the stress. At least 5-10 minutes, non-stop, is ideal.

The usual go-to's we tend to think of, in order to get a good laugh in, are to maybe hang out with a friend who's upbeat and has a good sense of humour, or sit back for an hour of comedy on TV, find a funny movie, go party, or come up with a creative, fun group activity.

The thing is, sometimes in the middle of a particularly high-stress situation you can't just stop everything to do any of the above. That's where something like Laughter Yoga can come to the rescue. Once you learn the techniques, you'll be able to pull out your own built-in, stress-reducing laugh, at will, just about anywhere and at any time of the day or night. Your laugh is completely portable, free, and available 24/7.

Attending some Laughter classes will get the ball rolling so you can better understand how awesomely simple and yet profoundly effective these laughing techniques are. Keep in mind, this isn't casual passive laughing. You're actually going to develop your laughter muscles, which may have atrophied under the weight of too much stress. Additionally, you'll be encouraged to purposely laugh about some of the very things that feed your stress, which really messes (in a good way) with the etched in brain signals that have kept you stuck in high anxiety mode. A good dose of willful laughter switches up the signals in the brain so that you get back in tune with your parasympathetic nervous system.

The payoffs? Breathing becomes easier. Your whole body feels more relaxed. Your mind stops thinking so hard and actually starts to quiet down. It becomes easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. And blissful moments of feeling lighter and happier can begin to creep into your day! You might even catch yourself laughing unexpectedly over something you would have been stressing over before.
