Our final game of the tournament (and the third of the day in 34c heat) was against one of the favourites to win the tournament, France. We knew this would be a tough one and we wanted to finish in style and show everyone what we are made of.

The game started at a fast pace as we expected, but Canada was resilient. Our fans were in full voice cheering us on. Finally, the French made a breakthrough going one up. After that everything was a bit of a blur. The French put on a show and the Canadians did amazingly well to keep them at bay with the fabulous saves of Andrew Hilton, but goals were conceded. We ended the game losing 5-0.

The Canadian and French fans were amazing as always. Both sets of fans cheered on both teams with the French fans joining the Canadian in the tournament anthem, “Let’s go Canada, let’s go”, and the Canadian fans joining the French in “Allez les Bleus”.

Both sets of players congratulated each other with warm hugs. Then, the French players unexpectedly gave a guard of honour to the Canadian players. A very touching moment that moved all of our players.

And that brought the curtain down on our World Nations Cup 2025. A wonderful experience that exceeded all of our expectations.

Next came a must-win game against Morocco. Win this and potentially we stay in the tournament. We scouted them earlier in the day and they looked way better than their results suggested.

We were right, they were very good. The Moroccans were fierce in attack but the Canadians fought well and produced some excellent counter attacks. Suddenly, with a painful five minute period, Morocco scored two good goals. Canada went on the search to bring the game back level. Rob hit a powerful long range effort that clipped the inside of the post to pull one goal back. Canada fought hard, but late on we were caught on a counter attack and Morocco made it 3-1.

From there they protected their lead putting two players in defence and using back passes to deny us possession. We still had time for a few good opportunities but the game, and our chances of progression, was over. Congratulations to Morocco!

Next up France!! 🇫🇷

Having built our style in the previous matches we went in to the Japan game with confidence running high. Our plan was to take the game to the opposition and try to dominate possession. We did that in spades but couldn't break the Japanese goalkeeper. With our vocal support making our presence known around the stadium, Dave Mueller hit a close range shot with a very nice finish on the half turn, to take the lead. We continued looking for another goal but some very good goalkeeping kept us at bay. Final score 1-0 and the players and Canuck superfans celebrated wildly. Our first victory!! Go Canada!!! 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Wednesday's second game was versus dark horses, Cyprus 🇨🇾. They had had some good early results but we were looking forward to this game. It ended as a very competitive and entertaining goalless draw. Canada should have taken all the points, having dominated the game and peppered the Cyprus goal, but it was not to be.

The squad had now found their confidence and were playing freely and confidently. We were eagerly anticipating our next challenge.... Japan. 🇯🇵 💪
