The Bet Ontario Handicapping Contest is coming to Woodbine - Mohawk Park for Pepsi North America Cup Night (June 13). The in-person contest, brought to you by Ontario Racing, HPIbet and Central Ontario Standardbred Association - COSA, has total cash prizes of $1,000 on June 13 and $10,000 total counting all six legs and the Oct. 10 final.

Former Ontario pacing stallion Shadow Play, foaled on June 5, 2005, won the 2008 Little Brown Jug for trainer, co-owner and Hall of Famer Dr. Ian Moore. Shadow Play was also the sire of Bulldog Hanover, one of the greatest Standardbreds in history. In 2022, Shadow Play was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

Dr. Gordon Gilbertson, born on June 3, 1920 in Hagersville, ON, greatly elevated the Standardbred racing game with the invention of the “Quick Hitch” to secure a horse in the sulky. In 2017, he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

Ontario-sired San Pail, foaled on June 2, 2014, was the Canadian and U.S. Horse of the Year in 2011. The trotter, trained by co-owner Rod Hughes and driven by Randy Waples, retired with earnings of more than $3.1 million. In 2016, San Pail was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

Ontario-sired Silver Reign, foaled on June 2, 1985, ruled the Ontario racing circuit in the 1980s for trainer/driver and Hall of Famer Bud Fritz and owner/breeder Eugene Forbes. She was also a terrific broodmare for Dr. John McKnight. In 2011, she was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

H. Charles Armstrong, born on June 2, 1921, was instrumental in carrying on the tremendous legacy of Ontario’s Armstrong Bros. farm, one of the greatest Standardbred breeding farms in Canadian history. In 2015, he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.

Woodbine extends its sympathies to the family and friends of Howard Walton, a longtime owner, breeder and supporter of Ontario horse racing, who passed away on May 29 at the age of 81.
