Skylar wanted to play volleyball.
Her mom brought her to All Sport One Day so she could try it before middle school tryouts. She played one session and figured out pretty fast that volleyball wasn't her thing.
Her mom's reaction: "You just saved yourself from doing that process."
That's the part people miss about what we do. It's not only about a kid finding the sport they fall in love with. It's about finding out what isn't it — before a family pays the registration, buys the gear, and commits to a season.
Skylar found track instead. She used to hate running at school. At her first meet she placed in the 100m, the 200m, long jump and shot put. She had never thrown shot put in her life.
She's 13. Since her first All Sport One Day she's tried jujitsu, motocross, cheer, soccer, fencing and swimming. She wants to be a small engine mechanic one day, which is why Girls in Motorsports is still her favourite. Two of her closest friends are kids she met at our events.
Her advice to a kid who's nervous: "It's just to try. It's just to have fun."
Her mom's advice to a parent who's hesitant: "You don't know until you try."
Every kid deserves to find their sport. Sometimes that starts with finding out what isn't.

What does a Celebration of Sport ticket actually buy?
Not a plate of food. A first try — and then a second one.
25,000+ Calgarians have been introduced to sport through our programs. 72% of them go looking for a way to keep playing after. That only happens because 71 organizations got financial support, 40 venues opened their doors, and 650+ member organizations showed up for kids who might otherwise never get on the field.
Your seat on September 17 is the funding for the next one.
