A wonderful week's end with our Wee Ones! ✨🍄

For some it was their first day back; we saw lots of happy friends reuniting and so much creative free play! Busy beavers with rope, shelters and simple tools. Paint. Mud kitchen delicacies. A big rock scavenger hunt (thank you big kids!) and some stories with our lunch. Blackberry jelly and bannock was a yummy afternoon snack - one of our wee ones supplied the berries and our Lily made the jelly to share. Team effort!

🐦 Birds and Words 📖 today. The sun shone, the stream tinkled, the children wrote for themselves, they wrote for each other, unrushed and at ease. We enjoyed every minute.

In discussing the day afterwards, Lily said "During our sit spot I was listening to the sound of the brook flowing on one side of me and the scratching of Luka's pencil moving steadily on the other. It was pretty special."

Fun in the fall sun with our Bushcrafters today; we never stopped moving! Knots and shelters in the morning, lovely hike to Fossil Creek for lunch, back home for games and a snack. The mushrooms are popping, flickers are singing, kids are having a time. Thanks friends! 🍄 🐦

✏️ Pencil sketching part two with Amos this morning.

Students collected natural items found outdoors and we put them in a pile in the middle of the round table. Our artists then sketched from their own perspective. This proved to be challenging, fun and a great lesson in "drawing what you see, not what you think you see."

Next week it's sketching with charcoal, with both bought charcoal and charcoal we will make on the campfire through a special process called pyrolysis. 🔥

We also collected and painted some special rocks that we plan on hiding for our Wee Ones to find on Fridays. It's nice when our groups can overlap a bit by helping each other through acts of kindness. Great day art friends!

A peaceful day. A yummy day! Tacos were on the menu and our foody team made short work of both the prep work and consumption of said tacos. Lots of good conversations around the island: "Should these red peppers be thin strips or small pieces? Wow, my eyes didn't water!? (cutting onions); These soft tacos keep the hard crunchy ones in!" Our core crew knows what to do and they're great teachers for our newer students joining us for the first time, "Tuck your fingers in so you don't chop them off!" 😂

Lots of games, a tinkly creek hike and a very angry red squirrel who hated our sit spot location! All ingredients for a happy day. Thank-you friends!

The wild and wonderful Wee Ones are back!

This day flew right by! And little wonder when you're hanging out with this bunch. Industrious they were - climbing, building and painting their many creations. Many a sword carved with the drawknives. Mudslides, tug of war. The goats were loved and the bunnies were fed. A fun and full day. Thanks for playing with us today friends! ❤️

Well, today was quite literally a dream come true for us. When we left the formal education system several years ago it was, in part, because of a need and an expectation of something deeper and more meaningful for both children and educators.

Though ~99% of society is by definition literate, is there a corresponding love of literature, a facility with the written and spoken word, a sense of excitement and joie to read and write and speak to each other? It is our hope and joy that our Birds and Words learners, immersed in nature, free of external judgement, surrounded by adults who love the heck out of a good book, will continue to fall headlong into literature in all its guises.

We will read, write, draw, speak and take risks in equal parts in our little cabin laboratory as well as taking our journals into the fields, forests and hills that surround us. And if we're lucky, bag a big basket of mushrooms along the way!

☀️ Well, this was the very best day! This little group has a very special energy and we so enjoyed the happy ease with which they glide through their day. Games and a lesson in the morning; lunchtime hike around the creeks; popcorn and fire roasted wild foraged apples to finish. And the weather was sublime! Feeling happy and full on this Wednesday.

🎨🖌️Today was art day! Amos was here, and it was grand! In quiet and powerful ways. The humble pencil was our chosen tool and naturally found forest flotsam our muse de jour. We sketched these items to create letters for our names. Our afternoon was a study of how space and place impacts our art as we made artistic pieces around the property- how does working in a pebbly creek bottom compare to our friends making art up high on the grassy bank? Kids in nature experiencing their world in artistic ways. Happy day with this artsy bunch!
