With 65 movements, Kankü Dai is the longest of all the Shotokan kata, requiring approximately one and a half minutes to perform. The kata includes blocks and counterattacks in response to attacks from eight supposed opponents.

Master Itosu broke up the Kushanku kata (dai and sho) to create the five Heian kata for practice bt middle school students. As such, for those who have fully mastered the Heian kata Nos 1 through 5, Kushanku (Kanku) should prove fairly easy to learn.

This kata, along with Bassai, are important kata for the Japan Karatedo Federation. It is definitely a kata that all students of karate should make every effort to master.

While Jion has only been passed down within the Shotokan and Wado-ryu styles, it is not a particularly difficult kata and could be thought of as a compilation of various elements from the Heian series of kata. As such, for anyone capable of properly performing Heian Nos. 1 to 5, Jion could be a fairly easy kata to learn. It would only be necessary to acquire a proper understanding of the meanings of the various techniques contained in the kata. It contains several techniques deserving of close study, such as those appearing at the end of kata – deflecting an attacker’s punch while grabbing his wrist, then pulling him in while delivering a punch to the side of the body – which make use of the opponent’s strength to deliver an effective counterattack. Combining a variety of basic stances, including straddle-leg stances, front stances and back stances, Jion is a representative kata of the Shotokan style and compulsory kata for the Japan Karate-do Federation. As such, it is a kata that should be practiced frequently.

Bassai Dai is distinctive for its powerful, dynamic techniques, as well as the diverse variety of techniques it contains, including cansecutive blocking sequences, upper-, middle- and lower-level attacks, and U-punches.

Bassai Dai, along with Kanku Dai, are the two most representative kata whitin the Shotokan karate style and must be learned after the basic kata have been mastered. As such, it would be impossible to attain the rank of black belt without first being able to properly perform these two important kata.

This kata, also known as Naihanchi, was given the name Tekki by Master Funakoshi. Just as Heian represent important Itosu-school basic kata, and Sanchin represents an important basic kata within the Naha-te style of Master Higaonna, Tekki Shodan represents an important basic kata within the Shuri-te style.

Heian Godan features an assortment of advanced techniques befitting the final kata of the Heian series. It begins with an inside-to-outside block/reverse punch combination delivered from a back stance, followed by a transition to the water flow posture in a closed parallel stance. Other techniques include downward and upper-level X-blocks, a crescent kick, a front elbow strike, an augmented uppercut punch to the rear, downward spear-hand strikes, simultaneous upper-and-lower-level blocks, and a leap to evade s stick attack to the lower legs followed by a counterattack to an opponent's shin upon landing.

The opening movement of Heian Yondan is similar to that of Heian Nidan except that the hands are open. Heian No.4, however, includes a greater number of kicking techniques, knife-hand blocks and back stances.

This kata also introduces several advanced techniques, such as upper-level front snap kicks, reverse wedge blocks in response to simultaneous double-punch attacks, and a knee strike to the face performed while grasping an imagined opponent's head.

Heian Sandan incorporates a range of varied techniques, beginning with an inside-to-outside block, followed immediately by a simultaneous inside-to-outside blockédownward block combination. The kata includes a response to a situation in which the wrist has been grabbed upon delivering a spear-hand strike, which involves the twisting and rotating of the body followed by an attack. The final sequence of Heian Sandan assumes that an opponent has seized from behind, calling for a back elbow strike performed simultaneously with an over-the-shoulder vertical punch to the opponent's face.
