The 2022 Oxford Properties Canadian Squash Championships may have wrapped up, but the Power glass court is extending its stay in Coal Harbour for two more days of jam-packed squash.

This Tuesday morning some lucky school groups are being introduced to squash thanks to local coaches Shawn Zwierzchowski and Josh Struthers. They may get the wrong impression and think that squash is always played outside in sunny 22 degree weather!

12:00PM: New players clinic, followed by some sponsor court time.

3:30PM: Corporate Challenge
We have Hillside Wealth Management vs. The Haebler Group, followed up by Oxford Properties vs. Richardson Wealth.

5:30PM: VSL Finals
Womens’s Div 2
VRC-1 vs. JTC -2

Open Div
VSA Academy vs. JTC - Yendell

If last night is any indication, the squash will continue late into the night (maybe some of these 5-setters are intentional to maximize court time) so bring a sweater and come by to see the glass court glowing against the night sky before it gets dismantled tomorrow morning!

After a night of pouring rain, the clouds cleared just in time for the final matches of the 2022 Oxford Properties Canadian Squash Championships on Sunday.

First up was defending champion David Baillargeon (QC) and his long-time rival Shawn Delierre (QC). Shawn took the first game, and almost took the second game until David fought back to win it in a tiebreak, flipping the momentum and taking the third and fourth games to win his second national title 3-1 (7-11, 14-12, 11-5, 11-3).

Next up were Hollie Naughton (ON) and Nicole Bunyan (BC). The rallies were hard-fought but Hollie was not going to give a single game away and won her third national title 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 11-8).

Congratulations to Hollie Naughton & David Baillargeon, your new National Champions!

And congratulations to runner-ups Nicole Bunyan & Shawn Delierre!

Who are the people behind the companies that sponsor and support our squash events?

We talked to Cathy Brown, part owner of Windsor Plywood (Silver Sponsor), about her connection to the squash community.

How did you get into squash?

I played a lot of tennis and badminton in my teens. Then I started a very busy career in the tech industry, moved to Silicon Valley and played racquetball which was the biggest sport going down there at the time. When I returned to Vancouver racquetball was finished and squash was the new sport. I found it fit very well into my long work days and extensive travel schedule.

Which club do you play out of?

I have been a member at Evergreen Squash Club since I started playing squash in the early 1990's. I lived right across the street from that club when I moved back from California. More recently I joined Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club and now play at both clubs.

Who is your squash rival?

I don't really feel I have a squash rival per se. Particularly in Singles which I don't play all that often anymore. But I think people would say that over the years the most entertaining matches I have had have been against my good friend Brook Parkin. She is the person I play Singles with most frequently.
Most memorable squash moment?

My most memorable squash moments are on the Doubles Court. My friend Frances Frost and I won the 50 + Nationals Doubles a few years back. And my two BC Doubles Championships are also highlights - one of them coming just this year with Niki Ahern who is fortunately younger, fitter, faster and more talented than I am !

Tell us a little bit about your business/organization.
Windsor Plywood is a distributor and retailer of Building Supply products that has been in business since 1969. We have 60 stores across Western Canada (to Thunder Bay, ON) and western US. Many of the stores are family owned franchises. We specialized in interior and exterior doors, flooring, moldings and specialty hardwoods.

What made you (and your business/organization) decide to sponsor the 2022 Canadian Squash Championships?

I am a part owner of the business and am passionate about squash. And it is really great to support the event here in Vancouver.

Are you playing yourself in the Championships?
Yes. Somewhat reluctantly as I am very late in starting to train.

Have you sponsored other squash tournaments?

Yes. We sponsored the Canadian National Doubles Tournament in Vancouver in 2018 and one or two Vancouver Lawn singles tournaments.

Thank you to Cathy Brown and the whole Windsor Plywood team for their help in making this event a reality!

Get to know the top Canadian players coming to Vancouver to play for the national title.

Danielle Letourneau is the defending champion, winning the national title in 2021 and also in 2018.

Since joining the PSA World Tour in 2015 she’s steadily climbed up the rankings to an impressive World #25, and #2 in Canada.

was only 6 years old when she first picked up a racquet, and since then squash has taken her through 4 years at Cornell University (where she was co-captain of the varsity team) and onto the professional tour.

On the tour she has travelled all around the world, notching several wins on the Challenger Tour until finally breaking through into the Round of 16 in Platinum level events on the World Tour like the British Open and CIB Egyptian Open in 2021.

Most recently she was playing in the PSA World Championships Cairo 2022 where she made it to the 2nd round. The tournament is the richest in squash history with $1.1M in prize money split equally between the men and women.
