LUMBAR FLEXION IS NOT BAD.
Reposted this many times already, still important topic:
"Is this movement bad for your back?⠀
Can this damage your discs?⠀
⠀
No.. 😊⠀
A lot of physiotherapists, doctors, orthopedic surgeons, and the general public have to change their beliefs about the spine.⠀
⠀
People with degenerative discs have been told that they can’t bend their back, lift heavy and do manual work.⠀
⠀
There are a lot of examples of people who have gone back to doing the very things they’re being told they can’t do.⠀
There is a lot of fear about the structure of the spine.⠀
They have been told to be careful with their backs and have the fear to do harm.⠀
⠀
We know that fear is a huge driver of abnormal pain behavior.⠀
⠀
A shift in beliefs has to happen within the medical, physiotherapy profession and in the general public.⠀
⠀
We can trust our back and shouldn't be feared. It is a robust, strong structure.⠀
Often with disabling back pain, the motor systems are overactive, hypersensitive. The muscles are guarding the back too much.⠀
That can be driven by habits of movements, habits of posture, fear, anxiety, stress, or just the presence of pain and you developed a protective guarding response.
⠀
Btw, this movement could, of course, be harmful when you suddenly lift 150 kilos from the ground and you are not trained for it. You could injure your tissues, similar to what happens with an ankle sprain. Besides that, tissues can be progressively loaded and can adapt and become stronger.⠀
⠀
Share this post with all your colleagues, doctors, and other health care professionals.. Everybody should see this! 😊👍"

Our bodies can do amazing things when we are able to access proper alignment! One of the most important elements to our alignment is our transitions.
When we are learning Pilates, flowing natural movements are safe movements. Good Pilates instructors place special emphasis on the connecting transitional movements between exercises. They teach you to transition in and out of positions, and to move carefully and thoughtfully whenever you shift your weight or change your posture. That way, your body is always prepared to provide the stable support necessary to assume any position safely. You’re more confident, more graceful—and less prone to injury!

Those that train with me know I talk endlessly about the feet, our roots. Lots of info comes through our body and into our movements via our feet.
Our feet enable us to stand upright, walk, run, and jump!
Each of our feet have twenty six bones, and thirty-three joints between them, this allows for movement in a variety of directions. Our feet help us to find contact points with the Earth so that we can propel ourselves through space and our environment.
When you take a Pilates class, how do you think about your feet? What corrections in class have helped you to find more anatomical awareness? Let us know in the comments!
