We manufacture precision centerpin, fly and mooching reels in British Columbia, Canada. There’s a journey in fishing. Then on to bigger fish. Then the biggest.

It starts when you are young when it’s about catching as many fish as possible. But there comes a point when your journey takes a turn. Family comes along. Quality time on the water replaces size and quantity. Watching your children—and grandchildren—go through the same journey you did is now your ultimate prize. At Islander, we ourselves are at various stages of that trip, but what we all agree o

$30,000 back into the Oyster River.

This past Friday, we had the opportunity to present a $30,000 donation to the Oyster River Enhancement Society, funds raised directly from the 100-piece run of Oyster River Edition TR3 reels.

A meaningful moment seeing this project come full circle.

Ahead of the launch, one of the Oyster River Edition TR3 reels went up for auction at the Campbell River Salmon Gala. Things got going… and didn’t really slow down. It closed at $29,000, gifted directly to the Oyster River Enhancement Society by the Campbell River Salmon Foundation.

Together, that brings the total impact to $59,000 going back into salmon enhancement and habitat work on the Oyster River.

A portion of these funds will support a planned spawning gravel restoration project within the side channel system, critical habitat that supports thousands of returning salmon each year and has lost important spawning gravel over time.

This work helps rebuild those spawning areas and support future runs.

A lot of good heading back into the system.

Big thanks to everyone who helped bring this project to life, from our partners to everyone who purchased a reel.

There’s a real art to matching the hatch.

Dialing in the right insect, the right size, the right presentation and watching a fish confidently sip your fly off the surface. It’s what draws a lot of us in.
But not every day lines up like that.

When fish aren’t feeding, or when you’re working new water trying to locate them, attractor patterns can be the difference between guessing and getting into fish.
Bold, visible, and built to trigger a reaction, these flies help you cover water, find depth, and turn curiosity into eats.

In our latest blog, longtime Islander ambassador Tom Johannesen breaks down when to lean on attractors, how to fish them effectively, and why they earn a permanent spot in the box.

A river rebuilt by volunteers.

Since 1983, the Oyster River Enhancement Society has been working to enhance salmon populations and habitat near Campbell River through side channel construction, hatchery operations, and community-driven conservation.

Operating entirely off-grid in Bear Creek Nature Park, the volunteer-run hatchery raises salmon for the watershed while also working with local youth programs to help the next generation learn about salmon and river stewardship.

Today tens of thousands of salmon return to the system each year, proof that when a community commits to a river, recovery is possible.

The Oyster River Edition TR3 was created to directly support the Oyster River Enhancement Society and their ongoing work on the river.

We’ve shared the full story behind the Oyster River Enhancement Society on our blog.

Most fly anglers don’t realize how much the sport will evolve when they first pick up a rod.

It starts with learning to cast, then catching fish, chasing bigger fish, and eventually focusing on specific species. Over time, priorities shift, gear choices become more intentional, and the reasons for being on the water change, opening doors to some pretty incredible places along the way.

In our latest blog, Welcome to the World of Fly-Fishing, Tom Johannesen draws on more than 40 years of experience to answer the early questions, break down gear choices, and show how fly-fishing grows alongside the angler.

Nothing better than hearing this from the water.

"What a great reel! Didn't find the steelhead today but the C5 is so nice I had a great time. I love my old Steelheader and I've got another top shelf reel (and it's a great reel) but this C5 is in a class by itself! Smooth, effortless casting, easily hitting casts 20 feet longer than I can pull off with the other reels. Really smooth drifts, stunning looks...please pass on to the guys that designed it!"

Thanks to everyone who takes the time to send us a note or share a photo from their day out. We really do enjoy hearing from you.
