Some of the most preventable fires occur in the summer!

Deck fires from improper use of wood or propane fire pits, BBQ’s too close to flammable objects, and overloaded electrical equipment from fans and portable air conditioners all can lead to a fire emergency on your property. Plan ahead, and always follow manufacturer’s safety guidelines.

As you start spending time in your cottage or RV this summer, make sure you’re actually protected!

Start by inspecting your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors (Yes, you should have both!). If they’re over 10 years old, replace them. You should have at least one on each floor of your property. If under 10 years old, press the test button and replace batteries as required.

Also, check fire extinguishers and fire blankets. Inspect them for signs of damage or loss of pressure as appropriate.

Another lake season seems to be delayed with ice and snow, but our friends at Parks Canada have been busy getting Waskesiu ready for hot weather. In the last week, they conducted the Waskesiu Community Fuel Break prescribed fire to reduce the intensity of a summer wildfire. Being proactive significantly reduces the future risk.
