The Wilderness Lighter - Lighter Modifications for Survival and Bushcraft use

An inexpensive and disposable lighter can make a great tool for fire starting in the wilderness - especially if we modify it a little.

In this video I share what I do to my lighters, making them more reliable and useful for year-round bushcraft and survival purposes.

What comes after a great winter season? A short summer break…and then another amazing Yukon winter! Spring and summer are a great time to get your winter gear back into shape and to replace what can’t get fixed. Some of my boot liners finally needed replacement after years of use.

A few days ago I found a brand new pair of boot liners in the mail. Can’t wait to take them out!

Claudia and I started using Intuition Liners in 2009. Since then they have been a cornerstone in our humble collection of winter footwear. We have combined the INTUITION “Mukluk” with a variety of boots such as Cabela’s “Trans Alaska” as our main solution for dog mushing adventures and for extreme Temperatures down to -50C.

Or in combination with NEOS “Adventurer” and “Navigator” overshoes to create an ultralight solution for snowshoe tours in temperatures down to approximately -30C.

Intuition Liners are made from closed cell foam, which does not absorb water. Therefore the insulation is not being compromised after a dunk in overflow or other wet winter adventures and your feet stay warm and safe!

Claudia and I have used these liners on dog sled races such as Yukon Quest 1000/300 and Copper Basin 300, on thousands of training miles with our dog team, on snow mobile trips, snow shoe hikes, winter camping adventures, ice fishing and winter hunting trips.

When I teach winter survival courses, at some point the conversation usually turns to winter footwear. Intuition Liners is what I recommend!

THANK YOU to Intuition Liners for making the best boot liners out there and for keeping our feet safe!

Survival Lanyard - My Mini Kit for Wilderness Outings

With COVID-restrictions in place, most of our international friends and guests cannot travel and visit us this year in the Yukon. So we were looking at ways to stay in touch with all those who want to learn more about how to safely play and travel in the bush.

We started working on some video content for you to enjoy. Over the next little while we will publish a series of short videos in which we will share useful wilderness skills and hacks, tips on equipment and review our favourite gear.

Making videos is new to us in every aspect. We do appreciate your feedback! Do you have any ideas on topics you would like us to cover?

This first video covers my survival lanyard, a little piece of gear, that finds its way in my pocket on almost every wilderness outing.

Survival Lanyard - My Mini Kit for Wilderness Outings For years I have been using this lanyard as a way to make sure carry at least some critical items when heading to the woods.

Winter is still a thing here in the Yukon! Two to three feet of snow still on the ground. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Claudia and I packed up dogs and gear and went out for one more overnight trip in the Fish Lake area. Warmish temperatures and blown in trails made travel a little harder than expected, but we all had fun. Even if we didn't get quite as far as we had hoped to!

Are you still enjoying the few extra weeks of winter activities we got spoiled with this year?

Last Saturday we held another winter survival course at Vista Outdoor Learning Centre in Whitehorse! Thank you, Nansi, for making your great place available and having us once again!

A full day course packed with fire starting, shelter building, survival kit ideas, trip planning, improvised pulleys and winches (see picture), signal fire, etc!

Thank to all who joined us on that day and made it fun to teach! See you on the trail! Stay safe!

P.S: We thought this would be the last winter survival course for this season...but hey...as I am typing this, we still have 2-3 feet of snow on the ground and it is currently snowing again...we may add more winter survival course dates...for JUNE...;-)...!?

Ice fishing season is coming up in the Yukon and set-lines for burbot are a great way to supplement your diet with some tasty fish! Check out the current issue of Backwoodsman Magazine with Fabians article on how to successfully fish for those amazing fish!

It is hunting season in the Yukon! With two friends I made my way up north for a moose hunt to provide our three households with meat for the coming year. Hunting while floating a river by canoe is my favourite way to hunt and this 5-day trip provided a beautiful time out on the land. Frosty nights, misty mornings, howling wolves and a successful harvest made for lasting memories. 10/04/2020

Great info on berries in the Yukon!

Enjoy berry picking but know your berries before you feast. We do have poisonous berries hidden amongst very edible berries. Learn to recognize it so you don’t make mistakes.

Beaver & Stewart Rivers Canoe Trip 08/12/2020

Exploring new routes for 2021! With a bunch of friends we went to Mayo and canoed the Beaver & Stewart Rivers. The first few days saw us paddling, lining, dragging and portaging boats and gear upstream until we hit the watershed of the Beaver. All downstream and back to Mayo from there! What an amazing time on the land!
