Last week, some of your favorite Yukon archers were at the selection camp in Prince Edward Island over the Easter weekend to determine if they qualify for the Youth Pan Ams taking place in Halifax, NS, this June ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž๐Ÿคž

A great video caption at our Arctic Sports Community Event at KDCC of a young competitor Leif Richards that came down from Juneau, Alaska to join our Inter-school Championship!

The competitor may start with a running or standing approach. On the take-off both feet must be no more than shoulder width apart. The target must be clearly struck by one foot. The landing must be on the same foot with which the target was kicked and they must maintain balance and control on the landing.

The one foot high kick was used to test the strength and agility of a hunter. It was also used to signal a successful hunt in many of the Inuit communities.
Well that's a wrap....to our 10th Annual Arctic Sports Inter-school Championship (pictures yet to come) and our first ever Arctic Sports Community Event!! Want to say a big thank you Gunaล‚chรฉesh to all our staff and volunteers for making it yet another successful year! ๐Ÿ‘

Our inter-scool was a great success over the 3 days with over 300 participants from 14 different schools in the Whitehorse district and the communities! We would like to thank Elder Ruth Massie for assisting with our prayers each day, Viola Papequash and the Rising Sun Singing group for performing for us, Yukon Rotary Club for their donation and the Yukon First Nation Education Directorate for their contribution of breakfast snacks and lunch throughout each day!

Our Event at KDCC turned out good with a huge thanks to the The Gravy Train for providing a dinner the night before for our staff, volunteers and board members and the pancake breakfast for the event itself, everything was amazing with a great group of friendly and helpful staff! ๐Ÿ˜€

To another year done and dusted...until our next event, we hope to see some familiar faces at our next championship! ๐Ÿ†

Judging the Eskimo Stick Pull
Last day at the ARCTIC SPORTS Inter-School Competition.

This contest of sheer strength and determination was traditionally used as practice for pulling seals from the ice.
At an officialโ€™s signal, contestants try to pull the stick away from their opponent without jerking or resetting their grip. To win a round, athletes must pull their opponent from the floor, or cause them to fall over sideways or release their grip. Hand positions are alternated between rounds. The winner of two rounds takes the match and moves to the next heat.

Judging the Kneel Jump -
2nd day at the ARCTIC SPORTS Inter-School Competition.

The player jumps as far forward as possible, lands on his or her feet in a squatting position while maintaining balance, with the feet planted no further than shoulder width apart. The arms may move back and forth. The competitor who attains the greatest distance is declared the winner ๐Ÿ†
