From Tom: Movement is an essential ‘food’ for the human body. Time out of mind there have been massage and movement traditions in every society. The martial arts and yoga have their roots deep in pre-history, probably starting in the Kerala region of India.

The other long tradition from every hunting - gathering society we know of is folk dance. Every member of the tribe was initiated into the seasonal and celebratory dances - these movements brought people together and - now since has caught up with this - fed the brain with nourishing perceptions as well as the actual nourishment of more blood supply.

Someone just asked me: "What are your thoughts on fascia holding memories/trauma/emotion.... somatic release (massage) therapy... and all things in this area of study/practice...?"

My reply: "I don't believe fascia is by any anatomical necessity holding more memories particularly than any other tissues. I do believe that there are standing patterns of tone throughout all of our different tissues, and construed together, those patterns are a representation of our habits of thought, emotional expression and movement "style" over time. Also specific events that have occurred will be met with compensations (adjustments in thought, emotion and movement), or specific tonal "signatures," that represent a response of the organism to that event. Those (conscious or unconscious) compensations, if not released immediately, can then get “buried” beneath additional tonal adjustments whereby the organism attempts (quite unconsciously also) to return to “normal,” i.e., the starting point before the event, despite still holding on to the event’s "signature tone.”

These events do not have to be “traumatic” per se. Rather just moments in time around which we have adjusted, that become stored “memories” in tissue tonus that may not be released immediately, but held and compensated for in the attempt to return to the initial pattern. We all collect such various event-compartmentalizations around which we move. And, when we move or touch in new ways that connect into and disrupt and expose the holding patterns, I do not find it surprising that we might “remember” the events relative to which we developed the particular tonus signature of the event if it is still being held.

Of course whenever we are holding a pattern that may not be serving us particularly, and we are invited through the explorations of touch, movement, conversation, and introspection to loosen our grip upon it, that is a kind of “release” which may be accompanied by various physiological signatures of the adjustment -- shaking, feeling of restored circulation of fluids and energy, and sometimes also including emotional expression that accompanies the adjustment of tone in the tissues. That’s fine and dandy.

And also, there can be on the part of both practitioners and clients a growing attachment to such “releases” because, well, “it is a wicked age that craves a sign.” We are all susceptible to the seductive power of “physical evidence" that Something is happening, and tears and shaking and memories and such can seem to be “evidence.” But these fireworks are not always necessary really. Sometimes we produce them from our yearning to prove to ourselves or our helpers that the work is working, as a form of "pleasing." And we can also learn to trust more subtle processes that can also be sufficient to initiate adjustments of long held tonus patterns and so restore our healthiest function or bring us to levels we never knew possible, with or without fireworks along the way.

This whole story I have told is just that, a story, and it may or may not hold much water, and there are folks much more deeply engaged in such matters than myself whose expertise I respect and whose life works we would do well to consult for deeper insights than these!
