*Why mushrooms substrate delay to fruit*

Mushrooms can delay fruiting for several reasons. Here are the most common causes and what you can do to correct them:

âś… 1. Insufficient Moisture / Low Humidity

Mushrooms need 85–95% humidity to form pins.
If the substrate or room is dry, pinning will delay.

Solution:

Mist the walls/floor, not the substrate directly.

Maintain good humidity with a humidifier or regular spraying.

Cover substrate well to avoid drying.

âś… 2. Poor Fresh Air Exchange (FAE)

Too much COâ‚‚ prevents mushrooms from forming.
Substrates kept in sealed rooms or bags without holes may delay fruiting.

Solution:

Increase ventilation.

Cut small holes in grow bags.

Avoid stagnant air.

âś… 3. Wrong Temperature

Each mushroom type has a fruiting temperature range.
If it's too hot or too cold, fruiting slows.

Examples:

Oyster mushroom: 18–28°C

Button mushroom: 15–18°C

Solution:

Adjust room temperature within the correct range.

âś… 4. Substrate Not Fully Colonized

If your substrate is not 100% white, fruiting will delay or fail.

Solution:

Allow full colonization before exposing to light and air.

âś… 5. Contamination

Green mold, black spots, or bad smell stresses the mycelium and delays fruiting.

Solution:

Remove contaminated bags.

Improve hygiene and sterilization.

âś… 6. Poor Light

Mushrooms need low-intensity indirect light (not darkness) to trigger fruiting.

Solution:

Provide daylight light for 12 hours/day.

âś… 7. Weak or Old Spawn

If the spawn is weak, old, or poorly stored, colonization and fruiting will be slow.

Solution:

Use fresh, high-quality spawn.

Store spawn in cool conditions (2–4°C if possible).

🌍 WORLD AIDS DAY — 1st DECEMBER
From the Mushroom Growers Association Cameroon

Today, we stand together to honor all those living with HIV, remember those we have lost, and renew our commitment to awareness, care, and support.

As mushroom farmers, we understand the value of health, nutrition, and community. Mushrooms may not cure HIV, but they provide important nutritional benefits — supporting immunity, strength, and overall well-being for those on treatment.

On this World AIDS Day, we encourage everyone to:
âś” Get tested
âś” Stay informed
âś” Support those living with HIV
âś” Promote good nutrition, including healthy mushrooms
âś” Fight stigma in our communities

Let’s continue growing a healthier, stronger Cameroon — together.

THE STORY OF MR. ARIKPO — THE RETIREE WHO FOUND A NEW LIFE IN MUSHROOMS

When Mr. Arikpo retired from active service, he thought his best years were behind him. His monthly pension was barely enough, his children were grown, and the quietness of home began to feel like a burden.

One day, he stumbled on one of my posts about mushroom farming.
Curious but unsure, he sent me a message:
“Madam, can someone my age still do this?”

I smiled and replied, “Yes sir, mushrooms don’t ask for age — they only ask for knowledge.”

A week later, he joined my training.

At first, he struggled.
His hands shook when mixing substrate.
He packed bags too tight.
He asked a hundred questions.
But every time he wanted to give up, I reminded him:

“Consistency is the secret ingredient in mushroom farming.”

Slowly, something changed.
The man who once doubted himself began to smile again.
His first set of bags colonized beautifully.
The day he harvested his first flush, he called me shouting with joy:

“Mary! They came out white like angels!”

Today, Mr. Arikpo is no longer the lonely retiree.
He sells fresh oyster mushrooms to neighbors, churches, and local markets.
He teaches other retirees that life doesn’t end at 60.
And every time he cashes out, he tells people:

His story is a reminder that retirement is not the end — it’s the beginning of reinvention.

If a retiree can do it, you can also do it.
Our last online training for the year starts on the 10th of December — end the year well.
Details of the training are in the comment section 👇
