Match Report: Final League Match of the Season by Peter Roy
Despite some beautiful early morning sunshine, by the time we arrived at the ground there was a stiff chilly breeze blowing and plenty of overhead cloud. Possibly because of this, there were three late arrivals and having lost the toss and delayed as much as possible we had to go out and field three short…..
Vik opened bowling into a stiff breeze that made keeping it on the track difficult to say the least, but with the lack of fielders the opening overs were good and tight. Ben the first of the stragglers arrived after the first over and seemed delighted he was not the last player, saving up some choice words for those who would come after.
Apart from struggling with the wind for wides and no balls, the first four overs only went for a run a ball from Vik and Chetan. However, once the Devil’s openers had settled in, they cot the measure of the pitch and started to unleash. Hitting with the wind and hoiking anything short that held up all over the place. The next three overs had 2 sixes and 4 fours and went for 38.
Despite the aggression, Rudi and Ramesh pulled things back before drinks, only a other 14 added from 3 overs with some tight bowling leaving the Devils on a chanceless and ominous 76 without loss at the break.
Needing a breakthrough, the thought was to slow things down, so myself and Jonathan came on.
3 Successive wides to open with was not the most auspicious start but the rest of the first over was just a few singles. Jonathan also struggled a bit with the wind holding it up and allowing them to club a couple of boundaries before the first real chance of the innings. Looped in the air bus safely landing between Jonathan and Rudi.
My next over was mostly dross, 4 wides, 2 singles, a massive six over long on before I tried a back of the hand leg spinner that got the breakthrough finally. 107-1 , but at least we were through. Jonathan kept it tight with no boundaries and in the next over I finally got something of a line, no wides and another wicket. 15 overs gone and enough of the slow stuff, back to the professionals with Arun and Ben to close things out.
Ben picked up a wicket and Arun got two including a great boundary catch by Chetan in the next three overs which went for under 8 an over, but the Devils batted deep and had some big hitters still to come.
At the end of the 18th over, a difficult hard and flat chance off Ben’s bowling went to Rudi who was unable to hold on. Ben took this with typical good grace and a pleasant understanding demeanor,
Unfortunately, this was one of their biggest hitters who went on to score 23 runs off the next 7 ball faced he faced as they took 36 off the last 2 overs to push them to a daunting 178-6
Faced with this, pretty much no choice to go quickly from the start. Vik and me opening, but with able assistance from the wind as the number of extras supported a good first over with Vik smashing 3 boundaries. A few more overs like this and a big chunk would be out of the target
The end of the second over brought the worst shot possibly ever played in Shanghai by Vik, (who was looking in fine touch). Slow and sitting up outside off, with the full face of the bat Vik lobbed it up directly and very slowly to 1st slip.
Ramesh came in at three and we managed to keep the scoring rate above 8 an over through the end of the 6th over. Helped in part by 9 wides in the 6th over, but as is often the case with 15 ball overs, when one finally landed on the stumps it brought an end to Ramesh’s innings LBW.
Ammad making his debut kept the score moving along, but also fell in the 8th over and although we were just about hanging on with the run rate (68 -3 off 8), we continued to lose wickets and they slowed things down and cut out some of the extras. I fell LBW to a really slow one and then Vikas followed right after drinks making it 77/5
Arun came out to steady things with Chetan and the middle order recovery continued. Aurn’s new bat (already adorned with the prized signature of Arun himself) was performing well but regular wickets fell and we were falling further behind. Despite Ben’s best efforts at causing confusion by shouting “14 to win” there was no panicking by the devils (the umpire was scoring). The lower order batted out the overs well and we remained 9 down for a very respectful 128. Ben running some quick singles and good support from Rudi, Chetan and the Johnathans.
Overall a good team performance. We are only missing a couple of big hitters and the odd catch could have made the difference.
Some fancy dress by Vik, Ben and Jonathan, as Mario characters and a criminal and possibly by Rudi who came dressed for a hot summers day for reasons unknown.
Onwards and upwards for the elimination this Sunday
