π³ ATHLETE ARRIVAL GUIDE: Money & mobility in Shanghai
Landing in a new city is exciting. Standing at a cash register wondering if your card works? Less exciting.
Here's everything you need to know about spending and moving around Shanghai during the tournament:
π Tournament Shuttle β During competition days (Oct 23β25), we've got you covered with complimentary shuttle buses between team hotels and the venue. No navigation stress on game days. Just board and focus.
π± Mobile Pay β Alipay and WeChat Pay work almost everywhere. Both accept most international cards, but setup requires passport verification and a working phone number. Download and register before you fly, or ask your hotel front desk for help with verification.
β οΈ Credit Cards β Accepted at hotels, major restaurants, and the venue. Less so at street food stalls and smaller shops.
π΅ Cash β Keep a few hundred RMB as emergency backup. Just in case.
π Metro & Taxis β Shanghai Metro has English signage and covers the entire city. Taxis are affordable and plentiful.
π² Bike Share β Scan and ride. Great for short distances between the venue and nearby spots.
π‘ From CiaoCity: Their free Orientation Walk is two hours of real streets, real apps, and real practice. You'll navigate the metro, scan a bike, and use mobile pay alongside a local who does this every day. By the end, you won't just understand how Shanghai works. You'll feel comfortable enough to explore it on your own β and curious enough to keep going.

π Meet Kangming β member on the tournament organizing team, UWH coach, and your Shanghai insider.
When we were planning this tournament, we knew we wanted someone who gets international athletes. Someone who's been the new face in a foreign city. Someone who knows what you actually need when you land β not just what's in the brochure.
Kangming checks every box. Born in Shanghai. Educated in France. Fluent in English and French β and in Shanghainese, the dialect that opens doors the guidebooks don't. An event host who shows you the city as a local, and explains it as a friend.
Oh, and she's one of us β a player and coach. So when she leads your Orientation Walk, you're not following a stranger. You're walking with a teammate.
The tournament brings you to Shanghai. She'll make sure Shanghai welcomes you properly.
