ASK ANGRY
“Is there any way my affair partner is my true love?”
Yes. And that still doesn’t tell you what to do.
I think we make affairs too simple. We either romanticize them as I finally found my person, or dismiss them as lust, escape, selfishness, or fantasy.
Sometimes they’re those things.
Sometimes you genuinely fall in love.
But here’s what makes it complicated: an affair exists in a different climate than a relationship.
You’re usually getting pieces of each other. Anticipation. Secrecy. Longing. S*x. Texts. Stolen afternoons. The version of yourself that doesn’t have to discuss the mortgage, unload the dishwasher, pick up the kids, deal with family, money, exhaustion, illness, or whose turn it is to buy toilet paper.
That doesn’t make the feelings fake.
It means the relationship hasn’t been fully exposed to reality yet.
And sometimes what you fall in love with isn’t only the other person.
It’s who you get to be around them.
Desired again. Interesting again. S*xual again. Seen again. Free again. Maybe you haven’t felt like that person in years.
So before you call someone your true love, get brutally curious about the word true.
Do I love this person, or do I love who I become around them?
What parts of them have I actually experienced outside the bubble?
If there were no secrecy, no forbiddenness, no spouse to escape from, no stolen time, would this still feel the same?
And most importantly: What truth about my current life is this affair forcing me to look at?
Because your affair partner may become the love of your life.
Or they may be the person who reminded you that you still had a life inside you.
Those are not necessarily the same thing.
Prescription: Don’t make the affair prove anything yet. Strip away the fantasy and look at the receipts. What do you actually know about this person? What are you avoiding in your current relationship? What version of yourself comes alive with them, and how much of that person could you reclaim regardless of who you end up with?
Don’t ask only, “Is this my true love?” Ask, “What truth is this love trying to show me?”
