🐢 Happy World Turtle Day! 🌊
Today, May 23rd, we are pausing to celebrate some of the oldest, coolest, and most resilient creatures on Earth. Did you know that turtles have been around for over 200 million years? They literally shared the planet with the dinosaurs! These amazing reptiles keep our ecosystems health, acting as ocean lawnmowers by keeping seagrass beds trimmed.
But today isn't just about celebrating—it’s also about protecting. From habitat loss to plastic pollution, our shelled friends are facing some tough challenges. Nearly all species of sea turtles are currently classified as endangered.

Shell-Shocking Facts:

The ultimate navigators: Sea turtles can migrate thousands of miles across open oceans, yet females will find their way back to the exact same beach where they were born to lay their own eggs.

Built-in solar panels: Turtles are ectothermic (cold-blooded), meaning they rely on the sun to warm up their bodies and give them the energy to move and digest food.

Deep divers: Leatherback sea turtles can dive to depths of over 4,000 feet and hold their breath for several hours!

💚 How You Can Help Them Thrive:
1 Skip the plastic straws and bags. Sea turtles often mistake floating plastic bags for their favorite snack: jellyfish.

2 Keep beaches clean, dark, and flat. If you live near a nesting beach, knock down sandcastles and turn off coastal lights at night so hatchlings can safely find the ocean.

Let's make sure these ancient mariners stick around for another 200 million years.
