“What are your eyes doing right now?” When a teacher asked this question during asana practice a few years ago it hit me like lightning - I was looking around, letting my gaze wander, my eyes were wildly busy. These eye movements were directly impacting my busy mind and subsequently my thoughts were making my eyes wander even more.
“Keep your gaze steady. Wherever your eyes go, let it have meaning” the teacher said. And when I chose to gaze at my navel or the tip of my nose or the palm of my hand, with intention but with gentleness too, there it was - Concentration, dharana. I was given the tool to create capacity of experiencing the shape, not just executing it. This tool is Drishti दृष्टि.

Pratyāhāra translates into ‘withdrawal of the senses’ and is one of the eight limbs of yoga. I try to imagine what it might have meant for the yoginis and yogis who practiced hundreds of years ago. For them their eyes might have been looking at a flower, their ears might have heard children playing, their nose might have smelled breakfast being prepared, their mouth watering and their skin might have felt the warmth of the sun.
For them pratyāhāra might have meant not seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling all of this, once they immersed in their movement and breath. Once they practiced yoga. Pratyāhāra, the withdrawal of these sensory perceptions would have been the line into meditation.

Yoginis and Yogis of today!! I feel that we need to look at this concept, considering the specifics of our time. Do you look at a flower, hear children play, smell food and feel the sun on your skin? Maybe yes, but maybe your eyes and ears are so absorbed by your phone and computer and TV screens that in a weird and twisted way all our senses are withdrawn, are swallowed alive by whatever is grabbing our attention on those screens.

When I practice these days, I don’t feel like ‘withdrawing’ from my sensory perceptions. In fact, there is an utter need to re-embody them on my yoga mat. To free them from the screens that I look at.

Some say when you fly, the soul needs a little while to travel the same distance. It needs to catch up with the physical body shooting through the air at an unusual speed.
Whenever I do the big lap around the globe to be with my loved ones in Melbourne or Berlin, I feel that little disruption and I need to ground myself.

Feel whatever touches the earth.
Exhale - breathe down as if your body grows roots .
Inhale - receive that, which is returning to you breath by breath. Let the soul catch up with the stable home of your body.

Melbourne, I wish I didn’t have to leave so soon! My heart is a little broken when thinking about not seeing my loved ones over there for a while.
But I can’t wait to return to my yoga fams for teaching 🔥
