The KONA Story

KONA - International Dance and Culture Network e.V.: connecting people from all over the world through dance workshops, performances, discussions, and culture projects.
We bring people together and we enter a dialogue with each other. Culture diversity is always playing a huge roll in our events. Because only together we can create a positive and progressive change in the intercultural society we are living in.

We use art and creativity as a tool to communicate and to share with each other. We especially focus on dance as an art from to exchange ideas, values, feelings and knowledge.
In addition to that KONA aims to create a platform for artists to be able to collaborate with other artists, to share, to experiment, to create and to stage their work.

The word kona has it's origin in the most spoken Bantu language in Uganda: Luganda. Translated word to word, "kona" means "to knock". But most of the times, people (especially the youth) use it as a slang word which refers to the metaphorical sense of the knocking sound in traditional Ugandan music. Looking at the huge influence traditional music has on dancing in Uganda, you can see a parallel of the knocking sound of the music and the knocking sound of the waist movement when people dance. If you look at traditional dancers you will find them "hitting" the beat of the music with their waist. Walking in ugandan streets nowadays you will find the youth screaming "kona", to motivate people to dance and to express their happiness. It can stand for: "hey, let's dance", "dance is fun", or simply be an expression of feeling good while dancing.

KONA ist ein internationales Tanz- und Kulturnetzwerk, welches Menschen von überall aus der Welt verbindet.
Wir organisieren Workshops, Performances, Diskussionen und andere Kulturveranstaltungen sowie Kulturprojekte um Menschen in einen Austausch miteinander zu bringen. Kulturelle Vielfalt spielt bei unseren Veranstaltungen stets eine wichtige Rolle. Denn nur gemeinsam können wir die interkulturelle Gesellschaft in der wir heutzutage leben positiv verändern.

Durch Kunst und kreative Ansätze der Kommunikation sind wir in der Lage uns auf eine sehr viel intensivere Art und Weise näher zu kommen und auszutauschen.
Wir legen bei der sogenannten „kreativen Kommunikation“ einen besonderen Fokus auf Tanz als Kommunikationsmittel. Durch gemeinsames tanzen kommen sich Menschen näher und es fällt ihnen leichter Ideen, Gefühle, Wissen und kulturelle Hintergründe miteinander zu teilen.

KONA hat sich ebenfalls als Ziel gesetzt eine Plattform für Künstler zu schaffen die es ihnen ermöglicht mit anderen Künstlern zu arbeiten, zu experimentieren, Performances bzw. Choreografien zu erstellen und diese aufzuführen.
