«I just wanna dance, it’s an art so it means that you can dance without diving into history» «I’m not into Timba history and Cuba itself».

Can we separate the culture from dance which has actually created this very dance?

My dancing path rocked from sport ballroom dance. That meant: to work on your body, to work out for the best results, to enhance stamina and stretching, to cope with injuries.

Moreover, ballroom dancers MUST realize the source of the competition, the laws of a contest, a skill to work on emotions, control weakness and know how to take oneself out of depression in case of an epic fail.

Those dances are sports. And they have nothing in common with culture.

As for Cuban salsa, it works completely vice versa. Dignity to traditions, community and the culture of unity are the basics. In the origin of basic steps lies the link with Cuban folklore, body movement takes a lot from Cuban Rumba, in the communication with a partner we see grace and elegance of Cuban Son.

Cuban songs lyrics are about political, economic situations that live and experience every person in Cuba.

These dances are not about fights, competitions and rules! They imply a soul and a heart of every human, who influenced/has influenced on the formation of this style.

These songs are the map of peoples lives. Could you dance or understand if you don’t know at least something about their history?

You might! However I stick to the position that even a tiny diving into the history and traditions will help you discover the full range of emotions and instruments which are hiding inside of the dance.

By getting to know the details of the history, our students discover that very feeling to the dance.

Literally, everyone wants to dance emotionally and meaningfully. Well, to feel it, I always advise to jump into the culture and history.
