Well done to the Torquay SLSC 'Badgers' Under 19 surf boat crew who completed a rescue earlier today! The crew were packing up the trailer at the end of their training at Zeally Bay when they were called to use their boat to rescue three children on boogie boards blown out to sea in an offshore wind (aged 11, 11 and 13 visiting from Melbourne and fast floating out to sea).

Remony swam approx 300m out into the bay and kept the patients calm while Ella, Julia, Meg and Darienne got the boat ready and rowed out with Pat their sweep. They then retrieved the patients and their inflatable boogie boards, lifted them into the surf boat and rowed the three children back to shore, against the heavy wind.

All three patients were in good spirits and the parents were extremely thankful the surf boat crew (all qualified surf life savers) were at the beach at the time.

Well done Badgers! Looks like surf boats can well and truly still do a good old fashioned rescue!

The photo is of the Torquay Badgers at the Team Navy VSRL Open, and they have since won THREE MEDALS at the Life Saving Victoria State Titles, including gold in Under 19 Female.

Rescheduling of the 2020 Lifesaving World Championships (LWC 2020)

Following the decision on 19 March 2020 to postpone LWC2020 due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, the ILS has discussed alternative solutions with the Italian Lifesaving Federation (FIN) and with the host of the LWC 2022. Both agreed with the proposed plan, which is to move the LWC 2020 to 2022, to keep the LWC 2024 at the Gold Coast, Australia and to plan the LWC 2026 in Agadir, Morocco.

The ILS Board of Directors has now decided by a postal ballot to approve this plan. The LWC 2022 will now take place in Riccione, Italy from 16 September to 2 October 2022.

The reasons for rescheduling LWC 2020 to 2022 and not to 2021 are contained in a letter on the ILS Website, which also outlines the next steps that will now be taken.

Sincères condoléances aux familles et Port Campbel SLSC

The two 'heroes' who lost their lives this morning at Port Campbell are Andy and Ross Powell (pictured). Both had a strong connection with our great sport and will be forever remembered as great men.

ASRL STATEMENT

The Australian Surf Rowers League is devastated to hear the tragic news of the drowning of two highly respected members of the Port Campbell SLSC in Victoria. The 32 year old male and 71 year old male sadly died in the line of service while performing a rescue.

A third member is in Alfred hospital in a serious but stable condition, and our thoughts are with this member and their family and friends.
We can confirm that the two 'heroes' are linked with surf boat rowing, they are our family.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of those we have lost, the Port Campbell SLSC members and the local community.
