Five years ago today, I had my colostomy reversal surgery at UC Davis.

I had lived with a colostomy bag for seven years, and when I began looking for someone who would attempt a reversal, I was told no again and again. I was determined to keep looking.

Eventually I found Dr. Elizabeth Raskin, then Chief of Colorectal Surgery at UC Davis, and she and her team gave me the chance to have this life.

Five years later, here I am — living on the Mediterranean in the south of France, in Marseille.

And today, I took myself to the opera to see Don Giovanni.

I’ve hiked the Calanques closest to Marseille and they are incredible. However I did not truly understand the magnificence of what awaited me hiking the Calanque d’En Vau.
