Fellow Judoka in the house!

Javad getting in some final work at Hayabusa Training Centre before making his UFC debut this weekend.

Not only is Javad undefeated in MMA, but he’s also a former Olympic judoka.

I first met Javad at True North Grappling, where he took home the $5,000 prize after winning our No-Gi Grand Prix.

Great to see his journey from the grappling mats to the UFC Octagon. Looking forward to watching him compete this Saturday at UFC Edmonton!

KIMURA 木村

A famous submission with a history rooted in Judo.

Known in judo as ude-garami, the Kimura takes its name from legendary Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura.

On October 23, 1951, Kimura faced Hélio Gracie at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The showdown followed Hélio’s victory over Kimura’s fellow judoka, Yukio Kato.

Kimura controlled the fight with throws and newaza before securing the bent-arm lock (Kimura) in the second round. Hélio refused to submit, and his brother Carlos Gracie intervened to stop the contest, giving Kimura the victory.

The technique already existed, but that historic encounter tied Kimura’s name to it in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a connection still recognized on mats around the world.

A black belt takes years to earn, but the character of the person wearing it matters even more. After 18 years of building Hayabusa Jiu-Jitsu, I’m grateful to have these people by my side. Each has helped shape our program and supported our students. People I trust and can count on. Motivation is fleeting, but discipline keeps us showing up. Our legacy lives in the students who carry those lessons forward. 18 years and counting. Proud to keep building with this team. 🥋

I’ve accomplished every goal I set out to accomplish in Competitive Jiu-Jitsu, but I’m not done challenging myself. I don’t step on the mat just to compete. I step on the mat to find out what I’m still capable of. I’m always striving to improve, always hunting for the finish. My path may look different than most, but there’s something about testing myself that makes me feel like I’m alive. The challenge, the pressure, and the constant pursuit of improving, that’s what keeps me coming back.

I typically I only share my Jiu-jitsu journey here, but the last few months have been a welcome change of pace, limited phone time, zero TV, and plenty of time outdoors at the cottage and farm with family. Now heading into a busy season of travel, teaching, training, seminars and competition, I’m feeling especially grateful for the life I get to live and the people I get to share it with.
