In 1975, Steven Seagal became the first American to open a martial-arts Dojo in Japan, the Aikikai-Hombu affiliated Tenshin Aikido Dojo in Osaka. Being American, he had to overcome many challenges and biases. He soon gained respect, however, with his abilities and devotion winning over even his strongest opponents.
This is a japanese newspaper article annuncing the first Tenshin Dojo's opening in Osaka Japan 1975.
The 130 tatamis are ready and waiting to open. “I’d like to teach around 300 people,” Seagal confides.
“Japanese martial arts are so interconnected. The spirit of martial arts must be unified…” he adds, visibly overwhelmed by the sheer number of options, before stating with conviction: “Sport and martial arts are inseparable.”
The students come from a wide variety of countries, including diplomats, doctors, and antique dealers. One of his Japanese students was so impressed that he declared: “It was a foreign instructor who first taught me the merits of Japanese martial arts.”
Mr. Seagal instructs his students: “I want you to understand the spirit of martial arts.”

Steven Seagal: A Foundational Figure of Modern Martial Arts Cinema
Steven Seagal occupies a singular place in the history of action cinema. Emerging in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he redefined the genre through a restrained, efficient, and philosophy-driven approach to combat, heavily influenced by Aikido.
Unlike contemporaries who relied on explosive spectacle, Seagal’s screen presence was built on control, posture, and minimalism. Films such as Above the Law, Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, and Under Siege established him as a global figure and shaped a generation’s understanding of martial discipline on screen.
Over the decades, his career expanded beyond acting into production, music, and international cultural engagement. His later roles reflect a shift from physical dominance to symbolic authority — portraying leaders, mentors, and strategists whose power lies in experience rather than force.
In Order of the Dragon, Seagal embodies this mature phase of his career, anchoring the narrative with historical weight and continuity within action cinema.
