Today's Nest

There are worse ways to spend a few minutes.
An espresso, a café terrace, and nowhere I particularly need to be for the moment.
Paris.

Walking home from dinner.
At the end of August, the light in Paris begins to change. Sunset comes a little earlier. The evenings feel a little softer. And suddenly you're reminded that summer isn't going to last forever.

This is a street.
Rue des Degrés is tucked into my neighborhood in Paris, connecting rue de Cléry and rue Beauregard by a staircase of just 14 steps.
At about six meters long, it's the shortest street in Paris.
No cars. No storefronts. Not much of a street, really.
But officially, a street.

I have no useful information to offer about this.
There were giant striped legs hanging out of a building in Brighton.
Obviously, I took a picture.

Paris is full of little passages that are easy to walk past without noticing.

Passage de la Trinité caught my attention for one tiny reason: the street is tiled instead of paved with the cobblestones you expect to find in these tucked-away corners of the city.

Sometimes that's enough reason to stop and take a photograph.

Some rules are harder to accept than others.

Spotted outside a market in Brooklyn, where someone was taking the “Sorry, No Dogs Allowed” policy rather personally.

I pass the Porte Saint-Denis almost every day.

It's seconds from my apartment, which means this enormous monument has somehow become completely ordinary to me... part of the backdrop of getting groceries, meeting friends, going to dinner, coming home.

Every once in a while, I remember to look up.

'Piano, piano' — made for the places where food happens.
I created this piece from my love of pasta, but also from my love of the places and rituals that surround it — kitchens, restaurants, long tables, good ingredients, and meals that aren't meant to be rushed.

The original was made with India ink directly on concrete. Now 'Piano, piano' is available as a limited-edition art print, individually signed and numbered.
Two sizes, because I wanted it to feel equally at home in a kitchen or on the wall of a restaurant.

And maybe that's where this piece belongs most: somewhere people cook, eat, gather, and remember to slow down.

Piano, piano.
In Italy, it's more than an expression.
It's a reminder to slow down, savour the moment, and appreciate the simple rituals that bring us together.

This artwork began on a concrete panel using nothing but India ink. Rather than just painting with washes, I built the image through repeated applications of full-strength ink, lifting it back from the surface until the concrete itself became part of the story.

The work is a tribute to French artist, Bernard Buffet, Italian actor, Totò, and my lifelong love of Italian food and culture. Piano, piano is a celebration of one of life's simplest pleasures: a plate of pasta enjoyed without hurrying.
