Grampian City U14s vs Banchory (Friendly)
Venue: Portlethen Academy
Conditions: Sunny, cool, with a brisk North Sea breeze
Grampian City U14s and Banchory served up an excellent midweek friendly on a sunny but cool and breezy evening at Portlethen Academy, in what was once again a competitive fixture between two sides who always play the game in the right spirit.
Despite the chilly North Sea breeze, it was a great evening for football and an entertaining watch for the spectators who braved the conditions. From the opening whistle, the match followed the familiar pattern whenever these two teams meet — competitive, well-contested, and played with real commitment and quality.
Grampian City enjoyed the majority of the possession in the opening stages, moving the ball well and linking up neatly through the midfield. Their passing game caused problems at times, but Banchory always looked dangerous on the break. Credit must go to the Banchory side who produced an excellent collective defensive performance, working tirelessly to stay organised and limit clear chances.
The second half brought a slight change in momentum, with Banchory growing in confidence and enjoying more of the ball. Both teams created opportunities as the game developed into a real midfield battle. At times the contest became a little scrappy, but that only reflected the competitiveness of the fixture. Importantly, both sides continued to show quality in possession and a real desire to play good football.
Every player gave their all, and the match was played in a fantastic spirit throughout. It was a great advert for the girls’ game and an excellent example of development-focused football from both teams.
Player of the Match: Brynn Murphy

Match Report
Grampian City U14s 2–5 Hermes
Northfield Astro | 10:30 KO
Grampian City U14s kicked off their league campaign in typical blustery conditions at Northfield Astro, facing a strong Hermes side in what promised to be a competitive encounter following a closely matched friendly between the teams just a few weeks earlier.
Grampian started brightly, pressing Hermes high up the pitch from the opening whistle. That early pressure paid dividends inside the opening five minutes. A calm distribution from goalkeeper Fiddo out to Brynn, who was left unpressured by the Hermes attack, allowed Brynn to play an outstanding long ball forward. Nicole latched onto it before producing a perfectly weighted through ball for Teagan, who drove confidently towards goal and finished calmly into the bottom-right corner to give Grampian an early 1–0 lead.
Hermes responded well from the restart, enjoying a spell of possession and creating their first opportunity of the game. Fiddo was equal to it, producing an excellent save to maintain Grampian’s advantage. Shortly afterwards, a free kick deep in the Grampian half saw Brynn once again deliver a superb ball over the defence. Nicole showed great pace to get in behind and go one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but a fine save from the Hermes keeper denied Grampian a second.
Grampian continued to press aggressively, forcing a quick throw-in which was taken smartly into Brynn. She slipped the ball to Teagan, whose shot was once again well saved by the Hermes goalkeeper. The high press continued to restrict Hermes’ time on the ball, although on 15 minutes a strong run from the Hermes midfield resulted in a dangerous shot that looked destined for the equaliser. Fiddo produced a superb fingertip save, tipping the ball onto the post before the defence scrambled it clear.
As the half progressed, Hermes began to find more space and rhythm in possession. The Grampian defence stood firm, with Eilidh in particular giving the Hermes forwards no time to settle. However, the equaliser arrived on 28 minutes when an initial save from Fiddo was followed by a loose clearance, resulting in a scramble in the box that Hermes capitalised on to make it 1–1.
Grampian pushed forward immediately after conceding, with a dangerous cross from Teagan forcing a corner. The delivery caused problems but evaded the Grampian attackers. Nicole was again unlucky not to restore the lead after getting on the end of a long ball over the top, only for strong defending to deny her.
Hermes then took the lead with a well-worked goal, moving the ball wide before a driving run and powerful strike found the near post to put them 2–1 ahead. Grampian continued to press in search of an equaliser before half-time, but Hermes were now finding more space. A through ball released a Hermes attacker one-on-one with Fiddo. The forward attempted to chip the onrushing keeper, who was adjudged to have handled outside the box. The resulting free kick was brilliantly saved by Fiddo, keeping the score at 2–1 at half-time.
Half-time: Grampian City 1–2 Hermes
Grampian started the second half positively. From kick-off, some tidy passing released Evie down the wing. She drove to the byline and delivered a dangerous cross which, following a mistake from the Hermes keeper, was nearly turned into an equaliser before being cleared off the line.
Hermes soon settled back into the game and created a clear one-on-one opportunity, but once again Fiddo produced an outstanding save to keep Grampian in the contest. The match became increasingly scrappy as both teams battled hard for possession. Hermes began to apply sustained pressure, finding more space than they had in the first half. The Grampian defence was called upon repeatedly, with Cali producing three excellent goal-saving tackles.
Despite moments of good attacking play from Grampian, they were unable to find the net. Hermes extended their lead following a throw-in, working the ball into midfield where their central player showcased great footwork and drove through the defence before unleashing a superb strike into the top corner to make it 3–1.
Hermes continued to press and made it 4–1 when a corner saw the ball tapped in at the back post. Both teams continued to compete strongly in midfield, with both goalkeepers producing further impressive saves. A well-timed through ball on 25 minutes allowed Hermes in again, and the chance was calmly converted to extend the lead to 5–1.
Grampian never stopped working and were rewarded late on. A misplaced pass back from Hermes presented an opportunity from an indirect free kick. The ball was laid off to Brynn, who struck a powerful effort straight into the centre of the net to pull a goal back.
Full-time: Grampian City 2–5 Hermes
It was a highly competitive and entertaining opening league fixture between two strong sides. Despite the scoreline, every Grampian player worked relentlessly throughout, showing great commitment and resilience.
Player of the Match: Eilidh – outstanding throughout at the heart of the defence
Goal scorers: Teagan, Brynn
A performance full of effort and determination, and a real credit to the team against a strong Hermes side
Good luck to everyone if your league season starts tomorrow.
Bit of Friday fun for you 😂
