Aberystwyth Cycle Festival

Is conquer the cliff on this year?
Thank you so much Aberystwyth Cycle Festival for supporting the #BronglaisChemoAppeal 😄

There are only three days left to use the Cambrian News 20% discount for the sportive, more info below! 👇
I’m working on the Visit Wales Autumn/Winter 2022 campaign. We’re filming this week (Friday 29th) at Devil’s Bridge, near Aberystwyth. We would like to film 4 x cyclists on road bikes to be riding through one of the shots. We would rather use local cyclists who know the roads and area, would anyone on here be interested in taking part?
Hi Guys
I can see the sportive has been cancelled not surprisingly really but there’s been no communication re deferred places. Is there any news? Cheers
The organisers of Aberystwyth Cycle Festival are appealing for volunteers to help out at this year's event
Entries are now open for the Aberystwyth Cycle Festival incorporating the Welsh Circuit race championships on Saturday the 23rd May.
Top event!
Fancy a day out? Do you want to ride the new Melindwr blue intermediate mountain bike trail? well here's your invite. It would be good to see you there.
Thanks again to Aber Cycle Fest for their sponsorship this year. The 2019 u11 Tregaron champions.
Bank holiday weekend. Three long glorious days to relax, see friends, let your hair down and... "make merry". Not all of which make for good Hill Climb preparation... you have explaining to do Calum.

He made the trip down to Aberystwyth to attempt to win for the 3rd year in a row at the awesome Aber-Cyclefest Hill Climb Knockout. Taking advantage of the long weekend he traveled down via London, wait, is London really on the way to Aberystwyth from Sheffield !? A chance to see friends and take in the sites, long into the evenings, or perhaps next mornings.

In the car by 5am to finish his journey and feeling distinctly worse for ware after the Big Smokes fun had made victim of him. The 4 hour drive gave him time to bring himself around and start to plan victims of his own. Not your average (average 25%) hill climb, during the Aberystwyth knock out he would have to knock out no less than 5 people in head to head rounds to come out on the top spot.

Equipment was on his side. Riding the stiffest bike in the world (patent pending), his custom steel Cycles in Motion frame, any power he could muster would not go to waste. And borrowing a sub 900g set of wheels off of a Northern Shandy, he was wanting for nothing.

Thanks to only doing aerobic work since the National Hill climb champs over 6 months ago, he was distinctly sluggish off of the line and a rather nerve racking gap opened up to his competitors as they darted off the line with more zip than Calum seemed to have. Was that all a ploy though ? Because look close and Calum was consistently in a monster gear and once it was spun up to speed, those gaps closed back up and he would continue on past his competition. This consistently left his competitors wanting as literally "finding another gear" on a 25% gradient is no easy feat.

Calum had done it. For the 3rd year consecutively he has won the Aber-Cylefest hill climb knock out. Perhaps the greatest feat of all was that he avoided a miserable taper and "fully enjoyed" himself for the weekend and still brought us the big W.

"Cheers" Calum

So 2019 was my first Aber Cycle Fest. Working locally at the moment allowed me to make the most of the week:-
• 21st Film evening with Stevie Williams;
• 22nd First ever TT (broke 30 mins);
• 25th Crit races spectator;
• 26th Y Diafol Sportive with my son (14);
• 27th Cefn Llan Hill Climb. I was rubbish, but my son won the Youth Plate.
What a fantastic event / series of events. Thanks to all at Ystwyth CC for making me feel very welcome, and a massive shout out to all the ACF volunteers without whom it wouldn’t be possible. Finally, a big “thank you” to the Marshalls on the Sportive: out all morning in those horrendous conditions deserves a shout-out 👏🏼
We’ll be back next year 😃
Our local cycle festival just keeps on giving.....better every year. Thanks to the volunteers, Samba In The Rain, the rain gods for the Nantymoch Deluge, and the warming sun at the end of Y Cawr in Aberystwyth.

The Hut, Aberystwyth - Llanilar Return - Ystwyth Trail (Traffic Free) - part of Aberystwyth Cycle Festival

We're thrilled to announce another of our festival rides is now open for entries. It's the first event of the '22 festival on Saturday May 28th.

This is a leisure ride over twelve miles, guided by a British Cycling qualified ride leader, starting at The Hut coffee shop.

We will head along the Ystwyth Trail to Llanilar and back. Bring something to eat for a picnic in Llanilar by the pond where will be stop for half an hour or so.

Traffic free, apart from just a very short stretch on a minor road. Very picturesque route along the old Aberystwyth to Carmarthen railway line. It is more or less flat - just a couple of short hills.

You will need a mountain bike, hybrid or gravel bike.

We take our time, staying together as a group, waiting for each other and taking rests when anyone needs it. Touring pace - no faster than 10mph average speed.

This Sunday, 19th September there are a number of grassroots community events taking place locally as part of Climate Cymru & The Climate Coalition's GREAT BIG GREEN WEEK. These events are a call to action on climate change and are intended to raise awareness on the lead up to the COP26 summit later this year (https://ukcop26.org/) but also a great opportunity for the local cycle community to make itself visible and have our voices heard to make sure cycling and active travel play a key role in future efforts to tackle climate change.

As part of the week, a grand tour of Wales is being made by electric vehicle, on route stopping to share stories and inspiration from the front line of efforts to tackle climate change in the rural communities of Wales. The event's coincide with a period of consultation on changes to Active Travel planning for Ceredigion County Council so it's a great time to join in, share your experience, ideas and opinions and help shape future transport policy.

The organisers of the local events are calling for safer cycle route provision for local communities along the Dyfi Valey between Aberystwyth and Machenlleth in order to better connect these communities and help promote greener, safer transport for those who live there.

There are a number of events during the day, beginning at Aberystwyth, each has a page where further information can be found:

Plascrug Avenue, Aberystwyth | 9am – 10:30am: https://www.facebook.com/events/323885396153198

Y Plas Machynlleth | 1pm-4pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/2654945468142668

There is also a Family Friendly bike ride from Derwenlas to Machynlleth on the traffic free cycle route | starting 1pm: https://www.facebook.com/events/173801211498922

The greatest sprinter of modern times will be cycling the roads of Ceredigion next month. Mark Cavendish won four stages of this years Tour de France to equal the record set by Eddy Merckx (a colossal 34 Tour de France stage wins).

The 'Manx Missile' has confirmed that he will be riding the race with his Deceuninck – Quick-Step team. Here's the official The Tour Of Britain press release:

Mark Cavendish, the greatest sprinter of all time, has today been confirmed as the first rider for this year’s Tour of Britain (Sunday 5-12 September).

The Manxman, who has won more stages of the modern Tour – 10 – than any other rider, will lead his Belgian Deceuninck - Quick-Step team at the UK’s biggest race.

Cavendish has previously started 11 Tours of Britain, finishing nine, and led the race for two days during the 2007 edition. A world champion on both road and track, he equalled Eddy Merckx’s long-standing record of 34 stage victories in the Tour de France and won the race’s prestigious points competition in July.

Mark Cavendish said: “It is always an honour to race on the home roads of the Tour of Britain. It is a race where I have always enjoyed success and I am really looking forward to racing with what I know will be a strong Deceuninck – Quick-Step team. It has already been a special year for me and riding the Tour of Britain will be a great way to see so many of the people that have supported throughout.”

Mick Bennett, Tour of Britain race director, said: “We always pride ourselves on the quality of riders we attract, and the participation of Mark Cavendish in this year’s Tour of Britain will no doubt whet the appetite of the British public. He’s a true great of our sport – something he has proved once again throughout his unforgettable 2021 season – and I cannot wait to see him on the start line in Penzance.”

This year’s race begins in Cornwall on Sunday 5 September, and Ceredigion's Queen stage is Wednesday 8th September, 215k from Aberaeron with a hill-top finish on the Great Orme, Llandudno.

The 2021 champion will be crowned in Aberdeen on Sunday 12 September. Live coverage will be available on ITV4 in the UK, as well as in over 150 countries worldwide.
