Ardnamurchan Girls USA Trip 2024

It was great for the girls, along with Jacob and I, to meet Calum MacPherson of the Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport in Beauly yesterday (The gent to the right of the attached picture)

Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport were kind enough to sponsor the Camanachd Association trip to ensure that it was affordable and that the opportunity was available to as many young girls as possible.

Calum spoke to all the girls who were going about the roles within his industry and how he wants to see more young women taking up roles within the renewables industry, particularly as Engineers and the like, I found very inspiring and I hope the girls felt the same.

Thank you to Calum and the company for their kind support of the trip.

Our fundraising prize bingo is on the 8th of June and it would be great to see as many of you along to this family friendly event to support the Girls going to America and also to raise funds for the club.

If anyone would like to donate prizes to the bottle stall, raffle or bingo prizes then it would be much appreciated.

If you are a local company who would like to support the event but can't offer a service or voucher then you are able to donate money and we will bring that money together to buy bigger prizes for the bingo so please get in touch.

We can look to collect anything or prizes can be given directly to Jacob Green or I in person or to any of the travelling group - alternatively you are able to drop them into the Sunart Centre.

The girls would like to say thank you for all the donations, sponsors and support in their fundraising efforts to get them to New Jersey next year - but they aren't quite finished yet!

In the New Year there will be more events - first up will be a dance in Strontian Village Hall on Friday 27th January there will be a dance with entertainment from Ewen Henderson and friends.

£8 for an adult and £5 for children so long as they are accompanied by an adult.

There will also be a raffle on the night!

Beth Jackson has Crotcheted this wee guy, Caman the Bear.

He is up for raffle at the Acharacle Christmas Fair tomorrow just £2 a ticket, money raised goes towards the trip.

The Acharacle Chrismtas Fair starts at 2pm

Our final player headed to the States next June is Louise Buchanan, now in S1 at Ardnamurchan High, Louise is another who has come through the primary shinty with Ardnamurchan Camanachd and Acharacle Primary.

Louise never fails to put a smile on the face of those who meet her and her positive outlook and humour will be a huge asset to the travelling squad.

A hard hitting, fearless and powerful shinty player who enjoys the on the field action as much as the social side of the game.

Today we have another of our seniors under the spotlight, Beth Jackson, who is currently in S5 at Ardnamurchan High and has been playing shinty since her Primary School days in Acharacle.

Playing mostly as a keeper, Beth treats the game as she does most things, with a great sense of humour and with plenty of energy.

She is developing as a shinty player all the time, listens to coaching points and puts them into practice. Her personality and attitude will be important for the trip, both on and off the field.

Our new week starts with one of the younger members of the travelling squad Anna MacAulay who despite her young age has been playing shinty for many years through Acharacle Primary.

Now in S1 Anna is a regular with the Under 14's and has proven herself to be a fantastic coach in the Primary Schools.

A keen, determined and committed player, Anna is constantly developing her skills and improving all the time.

Our next player up from our touring squad is Ardnamurchan High School S5 student Layla Orr-MacIntyre.

Layla plays for the Ardnamurchan Camanachd ladies side and was one of our two shinty ambassadors for the 2022/23 school year.

As a senior member of the squad, Layla has watched many of our younger players come up through Primary Shinty, having previously coached many of them at Lochaline Primary and Strontian Primary.

Layla is a hard working, enthusiastic and skilful player who will be looking to continue her shinty development this coming year.

Our next player who will be headed to the States next June is S2 pupil Eve Jackson.

Eve has played through her primary years with Acharacle Primary and Ardnamurchan Camanachd and is very combative on the park. She always gets stuck in, is very coach-able and her stick work is improving all the time.

We start this week with one of our most experienced members of the team, Ailsa MacGillivray.

Having started playing shinty whilst at at Acharacle Primary, Ailsa, now in S5, has gone on to play and coach with Ardnamurchan Camanachd.

Ailsa is a hard hitting, composed and determined player who never shirks a tackle and is a vital member of the travelling squad off the park with a naturally caring and supportive nature.

As one of our fundraisers, Layla OMac is cycling 100 miles in November to help get the girls to the USA.
So far she’s reached 93.68 miles with time still to complete!
