Atherstone Rangers Lightning An Under 9s football team ready to take the world by storm. A lightning storm

16/10/2026

Last Sunday, we welcomed Deer Park, often the strongest team in our league, to a beautifully sunny RMD. We had a full squad to select from for the game. Despite going behind within a minute, we kept it really tight for the next 15, and at 2-0 down we created a few chances of our own. Angus and especially Oscar, were great in defence, and Farren continued to shine in goal, with many saves from the oppositions impressive long range shooting. As an attacking force we created chances for Klay and Denzel, with Jaxon and Frankie especially tricky with the ball at their feet. As the second half went on, Deer Park played some great stuff. Ezra and Callum were both excellent disrupters in the second half, and Charlie was especially impressive with his press and combativeness, winning the ball back regularly.

No goals scored on the day, but some excellent performances. SPOTM went to Oscar, who played superbly - lots of great tackles, and used the ball well when he had it. My POTM went to Farren; despite the final score, he produced a number of great saves in the game, and deserves recognition for it.

This weekend, we head to Vision Vikings!

Atherstone Rangers Lightning went to Ambleside for the 3rd time in 4 weeks to this time face the Warriors.

With Frankie back from France, we had a full compliment this week. We started well, Farren patrolling his box with real energy, Angus incredible in blocking everything, Charlie playing positively every time, and Callum getting involved frequently. However it was our returning talisman Frankie who crossed a ball that was turned in by a defender. The Warriors responded well, and we traded goals frequently, with Denzel winning the ball and scoring with his left foot, and Frankie bagging a great goal from a tight angle too. Ezra made a number of blocks, with Oscar playing in a number of positions today and working hard.

Down by one at half time, Callum had 3 chances in 10 seconds to score, but their keeper and the post did amazingly. Not long after, Klay equalised with an absolute thunderbolt. In off the bar from a good 20 yards away, having run from deep in his own half. Sensational, and maybe the best 5 aside goal I have ever seen. It was nearly better as Charlie was brought down and earned a penalty, before also hitting the post, before the Warriors scored a couple of their own with some good passing. The last significant moment came from a backpass. The indirect freekick from Denz to Frankie was ruled out for being too pacey for the ref, so a retake was needed. This time Denzel assisted Jaxon for his first Lightning goal. Amazing. One last chance at the end saw Denzel breakaway and a square ball would have seen Frankie one on one, but the defender won out in the end.

A super game. A narrow defeat. All the Lightning boys can be proud of their contribution.

Klay, amazing goal my man.

Jaxon, congratulations on your first of many goals today.

SPOTM was awarded to Angus, marauding in defence, powerful in the tackle, and especially pleasing, with great positional sense.

My POTM went to the right side. Charlie I thought was magnificent, despite what Olly was telling me. Control, passing, dribbling, awareness. It was all there. And also to Jaxon. A couple of outstanding moments. He has a dream first touch, and he got his deserved goal.

More Lightning and their Dogs insights, this time with Supporters POTM, and 2nd half goalkeeper, Denzel.

In our new series, Lightning with their dogs, Callum reflects on the game last weekend with Ambleside Mavericks. A defeat, but a great game. 2 great goals from Klay, and one from Oscar provided the highlights.

Players of the match last week.

Farren, playing infront of his special someone, was heroic in goal. It wasn't really the number of saves he made, but the quality of them. Great positioning, great agility, great distribution, brave. A deserved SPOTM.

And I went for Callum, who was un-be-liev-able, especially in the first half. Poised, composed, dribbling off the charts. Strong in the tackle.

Big shout out to Dylan from the Pythons for his performance, and Lenny too, who I thought was brilliant!

Now, I wrote a lovely post last week, about how great the game was vs our club mates at the Pythons. About how great it was to come up against Dylan, Michael, Harley, Lenny and Olly from the old mini-kickers group all the boys started together in. And just generally what a good game it was. But it clearly never got sent. Whoops.

Well, Frankie was fishing. Farren in goal lept like a fish. Oscar was a piranha. Callum schooled so many on the pitch. Angus at one point turned into Nemo and got lost as he stood behind the goal for a corner 🤣 Klay was a stingray, with piercing run after piercing run. Charlie became a snapper, much more positive winning the ball back. Ezra had the grace on the ball of a sea turtle. Denzel became a shark of epic proportions, with Jaxon constantly dangerous, like an electric eel.

Anyway, not sure where I was going with that.

Game was great, Farren was unreal. Charlie scored a super goal. The mighty Denz got three. The spoils were shared. Everyone loved it. Best go, playing Ambleside in an hour.

I regrettably inform you of a lack of an in game interview, so here is a Denz penalty instead.

Frankie may have missed the derby today, but he still found the net with this massive fish.

The Lightning took to Ambleside last weekend to face the Hawks. The Hawks were fantastic and played some brilliant football, and with that came a few goals.

Our boys, however, also constructed a number of their own chances throughout the game. Denzel scored in the 1st half, as Oscar won a big challenge near the half way line to set Denz up. Farren was unreal in goal throughout, and kept the boys in the match, alongside support from Ezzie and Angus when defending.

In the second half, Frankie came alive and scored a hatrick, one from some great work by Jaxon from a corner, his second after a great recovery by Callum, and his third from a wonderful Charlie pass.

We missed the endeavour of Klay, but it was amazing to see Angus and Jaxon continue to improve, with both of them receiving the POTM awards.

Next up is a derby vs the Pythons, many of which we all started together with at mini-kickers. Will be a great occassion.

Post-game eloquance from the well-spoken Callum, saving what was a tricky interview to say the least
