On a windy — but thankfully sunny — evening, Isel made their first home appearance of the season at Costa Del Baggrow against a very handy Rockcliffe side.

After winning the toss, skipper Matt Eden made what proved to be a very smart decision to bat first. Conditions were far from easy, with the thick outfield holding the ball up and making quick singles more wishful thinking than reality.

Despite a positive start, wickets began to fall as Isel looked to keep the scoreboard moving. A Coe upped the ante working hard running a few twos to build momentum before eventually falling, while K Potts managed to bat with a freedom that both sides struggled to find. Late contributions from the Harper brothers helped push the total on to 60 and give Isel something to defend on a slow scoring pitch.

In reply, Rockcliffe found scoring difficult early on thanks to some excellent spells from R Harper and M Hodgson, with an early wicket setting the tone. Tight bowling through the middle overs by Eden and Potts combined with some sharp fielding kept the pressure on throughout, including a brilliant catch from A Harper off the skippers bowling. Behind the stumps, T Potts was outstanding, letting very little past him and helping keep things tight right until the end.

The game went right down to the wire, but unfortunately Rockcliffe managed to reach the target with just one ball remaining.

MOTM this week was Kyle Potts (with Alistair Coe running him close!) for an all round performance including runs and a very important top order wicket. We forgot to take his picture though so he doesn't get a fancy poster like Joe last week 🤣

A tough result to take, but another match full of positives, effort and plenty of signs that things are coming together nicely. Onto next week… where, knowing village cricket, absolutely anything could happen. 🏏☀️💨

Match Report | Isel CC vs Wetheral CC 🏏

For the second week running, Isel were treated to another beautifully freezing evening in Wetheral as we somehow dodged the rain and played our second CDCL game of the season.

Sunny? Yes. Damp? Also yes. Warm? Absolutely not. Whoever ordered this weather clearly isn’t a cricketer.

After winning the toss, skipper Matt Eden elected to bat first — and things got off to a flyer. Boundaries were flowing early, with fours and sixes flying to all parts as Isel looked set for a big total.

Then, in true village cricket fashion… chaos.

A mini collapse saw Coe Snr, Meeten and Eden all depart in quick succession, putting the brakes on what had been a rapid start.

Thankfully, the ship brilliantly was steadied brilliantly by Kyle Potts with a run-a-ball 40, while Man of the Match Joseph Howarth also smashed a career-best 40, falling agonisingly short of what would have been a well-deserved maiden half-century. Youngster Adam Stevens then came in and saw out the final few overs as ISEL posted 106/5.

In the second innings, Wetheral came out the blocks quickly and kept the scoreboard ticking over at a very good rate despite Isel's opening bowlers Hodgson and Eden beating the bat several times. Martin Norris soon came into the attack and created the breakthrough opportunity with his usual flight and guile, with Stevens taking an excellent catch in the deep — a proper grab that briefly gave Isel hope (and warmed us up slightly).

Unfortunately, Wetheral proved just a little too experienced and knocked off the runs with plenty of balls to spare.

A defeat on paper, but plenty of positives to take — strong batting performances, some sharp fielding and bowling moments (only 3 extras!), and another cracking evening of cricket with good people.

Now if summer could actually turn up, that’d be great. 🥶☀️🏏

Friendly midweek cricket club. No trial required, ability optional.

Our 2026 season got underway last night with a trip to Wetheral to face Fantails CC.

Despite an enthusiastic display and several players realising too late that you should always pack a jumper this early in the season, we were ultimately defeated by a very decent Fantails side who as always were a pleasure to play against.

The game was played in great spirits throughout, followed by the usual claims of “we’ll be better next week.”

MOTM for Isel was Malcolm Stilwell who was stranded not out at the end of our innings just 32 runs shy of an opening day half century 😁

Here’s to another summer of questionable batting decisions, Alistair Coe team talks and trying to remember where everyone left the scorebook 🍻
